Please be very honest. My best friend is graduating from boot camp in October and I'm going to his graduation ceremony. It's very formal and becoming a marine is something he's wanted to do all his life. I wanted to get him a gift with a lot of meaning so I thought of buying him a USMC ring. The ring itself looks totally bad ass, but upon bringing the idea up to my parents they said it comes off "weird" buying another guy jewlery. Am I just unaware that it's a weird gesture or were my parents wrong?

As long as you don't go down on one knee when you give him it, I don't see a problem.

Giving him a present is a great idea, but the ring does sound a little odd.

I wouldnt do it man... how do you know he doesnt have feelings for you? He might get excited when he sees the ring box and think that you are popping the question instead of just a friendly gift. You would get his hopes up for nothing and most likely get slapped in the face. Dont do it...

I gave another girl something in a ring box just last week. How do I know she's not harboring secret lesbian feelings for me? Because she's my friend, and I know she isn't. Not everybody is secretly gay and I highly doubt any guy is going to slap another guy in the face, that seems kinda weak when he's just come out of training to be a marine, don't you think?

The gift itself sounds perfectly okay... The only thing that strikes me as odd is buying a gift for the occassion of graduating from basic training, in the first place....

If he's homopbich, maybe you should ppass on that gift. Nothing against the contributions of our homosexual friends here, but I would't take the word of a gay man on if the gift I'm giving to a straight man was a little too suggestive.

My Ex Randy is a marine and he slaps harder then any gurl Ive ever encountered. Just because hes a marine doesn't necessarily mean he's straight.... And its hard to tell who is really gay these days. I get hit on by women all the time at bars and what not because i look just like your typical straight man... but as you all are aware i taste the rainbow... Anywho back on topic, i still say the ring is no go. even if I was a straight man i couldnt help getting a b0ner if another man gave me a ring. ;)

But didn't you say that it's his life's dream to be a marine? So, you're gonna give him a gift for getting everything he wants? Man, your friend is a greedy ass :P JK But seriously, get him the ring. You know him better than your parents do, and if it didn't seem weird to you, then get it... And then have sex with him!

And if those two statements didn't seem to fit together, were completely irrelevant to one another almost to the point of being goofy, then I guess you know where this whole thing stnads :D

It's weird because it's not something customarily done. T
hat said-the misgivings your family has are just ridiculous..if that's all that's stopping you-don't give it another thought....

Nobody said being a marine means you're straight. That would be completely stupid to say. I said being a marine, one would likely know a better way to inflict pain upon another person than to ***** slap them in the face. And I'm sure that there's some sort of code of conduct to honor which would likely not leave much room for slapping another person in the face.

Don't giggle and blush when you give it to him, and I think you'll be alright. Seriously though, if he is your friend I'm sure you know if he will enjoy the ring. Doesn't matter what others think if you have put thought into it and want to give it to him, go for it.

Be glad of the banning of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. If you were seen giving him a ring he might of been discharged. I think a chain would be more appropriate than a ring.
