Is this a weird gesture?

Please be very honest. My best friend is graduating from boot camp in October and I'm going to his graduation ceremony. It's very formal and becoming a marine is something he's wanted to do all his life. I wanted to get him a gift with a lot of meaning so I thought of buying him a USMC ring. The ring itself looks totally bad ass, but upon bringing the idea up to my parents they said it comes off "weird" buying another guy jewlery. Am I just unaware that it's a weird gesture or were my parents wrong?

Why don't you stick a little piece of paper through the ring that reads, "No Homo That way there's no confusion.

I wouldnt do it man... how do you know he doesnt have feelings for you? He might get excited when he sees the ring box and think that you are popping the question instead of just a friendly gift. You would get his hopes up for nothing and most likely get slapped in the face. Dont do it...FruityRudy

Be glad of the banning of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. If you were seen giving him a ring he might of been discharged. I think a chain would be more appropriate than a ring.
