Is it considered an invasion of privacy to sift through the garbage in someone's trash can?

Well, in the US, if the trash is out on the sidewalk, ready to be picked up by the garbage truck, it's public property. >_>

When I think of trash, I think of something that they no longer want anymore. If they really get bothered by someone picking stuff out of their trash can than they shouldn't have thrown anything away. Of course, as long as they don't make a mess or interfere with the person's life, I don't see a problem with it.

Umm, I am very dubious on this; can you cite sources for that claim?

Ah, you're right; mea culpa. That annoys me; I still chase off people who come by to rummage through my trash, though.

People throw awaymany of things with personal information on them. Many people dig through trash just looking for personal information and identification. So it's just something else to charge identity theives with.

Or a kid will leave his toy or bike on the front lawn during garbage dayand some trash picker will steal it then claim he thought it was garbage. So that's another reason. They can't claim they didn't know or play innocent because they weren't supposed to be garbage picking in the first place.

They can ask the owner of the garbage for something that's in the grabage but it's not legal to search the trash nor raid the trash.

No. But who would want to dig through someone's trash when the garbage dump is where it's at?

No, that's why they threw all of stuff away. It's full of AIDS. That's why I throw it away. When I find out some person that was over my place has AIDS or cancerI throw everything away and move to escape contamination.

Yes, and people are sensitive about that more than ever. You know, concerning identity theft and all.

I wouldn't call it an invasion of privacy, since, well... it's not private. Unless you are looking through Oscar the Grouch's trashcan/home.
