A recent report comparing employment in the US between 1910 and 2000 gives us a clear picture (and I note, one pretty much exactly echoed in the UK). Over the course of the last century, the number of workers employed as domestic servants, in industry, and in the farm sector has collapsed dramatically. At the same time, professional, managerial, clerical, sales, and service workers tripled, growing from one-quarter to three-quarters of total employment. In other words, productive jobs have, just as predicted, been largely automated awa.

But rather than allowing a massive reduction of working hours to free the worlds population to pursue their own projects, pleasures, visions, and ideas, we have seen the ballooning not even so much of the service sector as of the administrative sector, up to and including the creation of whole new industries like financial services or telemarketing, or the unprecedented expansion of sectors like corporate law, academic and health administration, human resources, and public relations. And these numbers do not even reflect on all those people whose job is to provide administrative, technical, or security support for these industries, or for that matter the whole host of ancillary industries (dog-washers, all-night pizza deliverymen) that only exist because everyone else is spending so much of their time working in all the other ones.

These are what I propose to call bullshit jobs.

Is it?

It's retail. If that's not a bullshit job, then I don't want to go near one.

I worked 120+ hours (don't have an exact count currently) of overtime from May to the end of August this year (and get to bank it, no payout). I move anywhere between 1500 and 5000 lbs of product daily. Whether around the warehouse, or in the form of deliveries. The only "bullsh!t" part of my job is I don't get nearly what I deserve to get paid for working my ass completely off.

I'm a nursing asisstant so no, I don't have a bullshit job. It's actually a pretty important job even if you don't have to be a genius to do it, just have common sense and a little training.

All my previous jobs were bullshit jobs though....

Well at least here in Michigan, you take a 75 hour course and once you pass that (Fun fact, over half my class managed to fail somehow....) you schedule a State test and passing said test gets you certification.

I went a crazy route and took a two week version of the course which involved me going there 6 days a week while working full time at my job. Let's just say that was not a fun couple of weeks....

It's the best job I have had so far. Making a few bucks over minimum wage which is nice and the facility I just started at is a new facility where they are trying to up the standard of care which has made for a nice work environment.

My last job was hell though. I worked at a POS nursing home that was on special focus by the State and was just in shambles management wise...

I scheduled myself 16 hour shifts there, partially as a way to get control of my schedule as they had a cause of the contract where if they were short handed they could force you to work up to 16 hours and if you left it cost you your job. Despite said clause and everyone usually working 16 hour shifts, we were still chronically short-handed and that made for really ****** work days. I have actually worked 13 hours before getting a break before....

most folks would consider my job good, but its a BS job like all the rest of them.

but yea, business owners recieved a boon via technology and automation and rather than sharing that success with employees... they leverage the fact that they require fewer employees to extract more labor for less compensation.

Even in my high demand IT industry, companies dont want to have to compete for labor by offering employees competitive salaries so they routinely petition congress to raise the quotas for immigrants in the tech sector in order to bloat the labor pool and drive down compensation.

Basically no matter what, put on the lipstick because you are getting ****ed.

I'm a co op and help engineers with testing stuff mostly. Occasionally I guess it could be seen as bullshit because the test is poorly designed usually because the requirements document was just thrown together real quick.

I do chemistry and physical testing on pipe used in oil and natural gas industry. Working in a new 1 billion dollar plant. Sometimes it's boring slow other times its overwhelming because we have to qualify new products as all the equipment is new and that's a lot of testing.

Maybe. I do generic pharmaceutical formulation development. Technically we could make a product without any of my work but the FDA requires us to have an in-depth understanding of the drug products we make and the process we use.

I'm an ultrasound technologist and despite the fact that we're portrayed on tv as people who only tell you the sex of your baby as if it were a job any drop out can do(and also where we're called technicians rather than technologists which I loathe) it's a highly skilled profession that takes years to learn.  On a daily basis I mostly do ultrasounds on people who arrive in our emergency room with pain or other problems mostly not having anything to do with pregnancy.  It also pays well.  If you work at the right place you can make over 100,000 yearly.   So no my job is not a bullshit job.

I'm a laborer for a construction company.  Basically I do what ever a machine can't do or what ever the higher paid guys don't want to do. An equipment operator could easily do my job given the amount of down time they have,  so yes, I have an bullshit job.

The good thing is that this job pays enough that I don't have to take out student loans for college. The bad thing is that it's unnecessary and I could be fired to save the company money anytime, so I can't slack off.

tl;dr article, but I think my job would qualify.

I work air-traffic dispatch, and I do very little at my job: just phone a base every 15 minutes or so, and give incoming aircraft clearance to land. Pretty much the same as the flag wavers you see at road construction areas, but I have a leather seat, headset, and internet.

There are people who work in my firm and I literally don't know what they even do, and there are dozens of them. They sit at desks all day long and have titles like 'Executive Officer' or 'Human resources associate' and I haven't the faintest idea how they contribute in any way and note that things tick over perfectly fine as normal whenever one calls in sick or takes a vacation.

There's this new co op and for the last week and a half I haven't seen him do any work at all. Whenever I go by his cubicle, he's always reading an engineering type book, checking email, or some other time waster type thing.

It's also crazy the amount of time that people can just not work during work hours and not get in trouble. Like this one dude makes a personal call basically every day or two. And the amount of time that some people spend chatting is ridiculous. If I think someone will be talking for a long time while I'm working on excel or something I write down the time they started and see when they leave. One time it was like 45 minutes two people were talking and it wasn't related to work.
