Most people I seen that are walking on the road walk with the traffic. I think safety wise that is worse than walking against traffic. Wouldnt you think?

I think of it this way. Would you rather watch out for traffic coming behind your on in front of you? Either way your going to have to know where the cars are at. Walking against traffic makes it easier to see the cars.

You're supposed to walk on the side of oncoming traffic. Surely everyone knows this? That way if a car is on your side you see it early and you are able to step in.

I walk and ride(bike) with the traffic.

Walking against the traffic, from time to time.

Riding against the traffic, rarely to never.

Do you people not have sidewalks wide enough for two or more people? Roads are wide, sidewalks make them wider. I find it hard to believe that unless someone was driving, and drove up onto the sidewalk (quite a feat in itself, especially by accident) that you'd even get hit by a car while on the side-walk. Simple solution: dont stand on the road, and dont try to balance down the edge of the sidewalk/road with your arms stretched out, you should be fine.

Not every place has a sidewalk.

Not every place has roads, or traffic.

Well that's a given. The point that was given was that when you are walking on the shoulder of the road going against the traffic seems more logical because you can see the cars whereas you can't if you walk with it.

Well you should never walk with traffic... that would cause congestion. At least be a few feet away, like at the side of the road.

That's what I just said, on the shoulder of the road not in the road.

A few years ago, while riding my bike against traffic, I was hit by a minivan as it pulled out of a gas station. The front tire of my bike was deformed by the impact, but I sustained no injuries. Despite the fact that the minivan was moving at only ~10 MPH, I was horrified; I was sure that I was going to die. When the driver who hit me took me to a bikeshop to get the bike fixed, the bikeshop owner said that I was the one in the wrong. What do you think?

You're riding your bike on the wrong side of the road, of course you're at fault.

I was riding close to the curb/ sidewalk. I was afraid to ride with traffic because I wouldn't have been able to see the cars moving past me. The thought of being struck from behind was frightening.

It doesn't matter what your intent was. Legally, you're supposed to ride with traffic.

Bicycles are supposed to go with traffic. In your case, the driver did not expect someone to be coming from your direction. You seemed to have more of a responsibility to check to avoid such a situation,

Vision is the primary sensation that human beings utilize in order to percieve the world around us. We have eyes facing forward but not backward andbecause of this cars coming towards our fronts are the only visible cars in a normal situation. That is why pedestrians are supposed to walk against traffic.Hitchhikers probably walk with traffic in order to be given a ride in the direction they need to go. Therefore, initially gaining their vehicular transportation is risky. Personally, I would rather have an automobile then have to walk in order to travel.

Umm, why is the idea of there not being a pavement to walk on considered backward? The UK and Ireland I know have lots of country roads where there are no pavements and pedestrians are walking on narrow roads (which quite often have hedges). Dangerous? Yes, I certainly wouldn't do it but it is legally allowed. And to the user that rode his bicycle against the flow of traffic: very very silly to do. This is exactly why I can't stand cyclists - they don't know nor follow the rules of the road. Think about it: you're cycling towards the moving vehicle - by doing so, you're giving the driver less time to react and thus move their vehicle around you. You walk against the flow of traffic so you can see a vehicle coming and can dodge it.

Statement of the obvious there TC.

And pay no attention to the urbanites who have never left their neighbourhood and don't seem to grasp the context of your question.

Walk against traffic so you can react, and ride a bike with traffic, because you ARE traffic. The use of "pavement" for "sidewalk" in this thread had me seriously f*cking confused for a while...

lol. 99% roads i drive on always have sidewalks. i can literally only think of one around my area where there is no side walk. Then again even then that don't need one because it is paved BUT people are not allowed drive on it and at least a lane wide.

When getting my license i was taught that walking and riding your bike should be against traffic.
