The purpose of OT is to talk about stuff generally outside games. But you are right that GameSpot is mainly a gaming website and forum, and OT is a very small part of it, but yet very, very popular.

People have and will express opinions in the 'off-topic' forum, this is the 'norm'. What would you like to see in the off topic forum? One word answers?  Because like you said, you're just staring at a screen, whether it be filled with someone's opinion or a one word answer.

 I recommend that you don't read long posts. I go through that phase, where I can't be bothered to read huge chunks of written word at one sitting.  I skip them. I don't begrudge people that make these posts as obviously they had something to say, and whether it is relevant to you or not, is irrelevant. What is important is that the forum members, within the forum rules, have the right to post, again within guidelines, whatever they want. The mods seem to take care of anything that might offend or is simply against house regulations. So, now you are staring at the screen, what does it say?

I've calculated that the proportion of scientific topics to normal topics is 1/7 using algorithms and geometry.  Don't even tell us we're too scientific I mean 1/7 people.
