ITT Technical Institute is officially closing all of its campuses following federal sanctions imposed against the company. The for-profit college announced the changes in a statement:

It is with profound regret that we must report that ITT Educational Services, Inc. will discontinue academic operations at all of its ITT Technical Institutes permanently after approximately 50 years of continuous service. With what we believe is a complete disregard by the U.S. Department of Education for due process to the company, hundreds of thousands of current students and alumni and more than 8,000 employees will be negatively affected.

The announcement comes just one week after ITT Tech stopped enrolling students following a federal crackdown. ITT Tech and other for-profit colleges have been widely criticized for accepting billions of dollars in government grants and loans while failing to provide adequate job training for its students.

I'd like to see all these 'for profit' schools closed.

Yup, my aunt just got let go because of it.

Personal bias aside if your school can't show evidence that it's improving it's student's lives then perhaps it shouldn't be in business.

While I feel terribly for the employees that lost jobs and the students, I have to say good riddance.

Yay! Good for the US government.

Man, between closing prisons, for-profit schools, banning antimicrobial soaps, and releasing non-violent marijuana-related criminals, the government has been doing a lot of good by me.

A school is a tool to improving one's life. You have to put the work in....and you have to select something obtainable. Too many people continue their education in the fields least likely to land them a job. Also the job market is beyond the scope of any school. In the end the responsibility is on the individual. I'm so tired of the outside blame and never once is personal responsibility addressed.

@LJS9502_basic: personal responsibility is paramount but we shouldn't lose focus on holding schools up to a certain standard. They need to provide an adequate level of education and fostering of the necessary skill sets. Schools aren't going to make people successful, that's up to the student, but they need to provide the necessary tools for students to take advantage of.

Was ITT accredited and if so, in what capacity?

ITT was not accredited and the credits were not transferable to other colleges. That said, ITT isn't as crooked as you all think. I am an ITT grad and going there was the best thing that could've happened to me. Truly made my life better.

It is up to the students to improve themselves not ITT. They have a job placement program and they have counselors. The rest is up to you.

@Serraph105: 'if your school can't show evidence that it's improving it's student's lives then perhaps it shouldn't be in business."

Then the majority of public schools should close down?

Why not explain to us how going to ITT made your life better. I do not know enough about the school to pass judgement like others here so I won't condemn nor praise it. All I can say is the commercials always reminded me of ICS but obviously one focuses on corresponding rather than in school teachings.

So ITT was pretty much trying to pull off the same crap that Everest and TCI are doing. The former of which was also busted. Well serves their right. There's no need for these types of colleges. Public community colleges offer the same training and certificate programs for less money. And in some cases, practically pennies to the tuition rates of today.

Sure there's some honest folks that are losing their jobs. But this is inevitable. The college and higher education system is an economcial bubble that is bound to burst. Its unsustainable to keep this corporate model of tuition hikes paid with money people don't have. And brainwashing the population from a young age that they need a degree to make a good living. There are thousands if not millions with unpayable student loans with no bankruptcy option. Someday its going to affect the real estate market when all these college grads can't afford to buy homes, let alone vacation ones. Along with other areas of the economy. The sooner the America college system fails and is forced to restructure itself, the better.

Well, learning is improvement of one's life. So the demand seems to be one in the same.

This is not a surprise though. "Hey, remember how long, and how hard it takes you to get that degree? Screw all of it! Get your degree in 18 months with half the work!!" How did people ever fall for this shit?!

Well, if the people that go to those schools can't even get jobs after leaving their programs, we shouldn't waste tax dollars on schools that are utterly worthless like that.

ITT is essentially an expensive technical school with great job placement. Therefore it improved my life the way any other tech school can. It equipped me with skills in a field that was in demand at the time. I received field training as well as classroom knowledge and had an entry level job in my field 6 months into school.

It IS true that ITT is more expensive than other tech schools. But if the gripe is that students spend too much money going to ITT 99.99999% of schools should shut down.

Check the underemployed rate in the U.S. If THIS is the standard damn near every college/university/tech school should shut down. You can't blame a tech school for not getting a job if the market is crowded or flat. That is utterly ridiculous.

Why does this happen so often to these schools ? They all end up closing for the same fraudulent reasons. My wife was in one long ago, and they forgave the student loan, but she was in the last week, so she never got her diploma, so messed up. Then she graduated from Heald, and then they ended up closing two years after. Crazy !

Then again, there's always college--can't decide between barber or clown, though.

The government needs to crack down on colleges also for the product they are putting out. They are so focused on political correctness that educations is getting lost.
