I am sure you guys have all heard of the so called "perfect" equalizer setting for itunes. (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040902070807431)

Well, I gave it a shot, and sure enough, it did make my music sound a little clearer and more defined. But after a week or so of using the setting (mainly for hip hop, rock, aternative music) strange things started happening to my speakers. Sometimes my speakers would start hissing or popping when playing back music. I turned the setting off and the popping and hissing would still sometimes be there. Do you think that the "perfect" itunes setting pushes the speakers too hard? Thats what I kind of think happened. My JBL Creatures are only a few months old, and they should not be having this problem.

Any help would be great!

Thanks

Not exactly, could you please explain how using the "perfect" setting could harm my speakers?

Two big problems with that:

1- There can't be a "perfect" setting for an equalizer. The whole point of an equalizer is to adjust the frequency response of your equipment, so what works for your JBLs wouldn't necessarily work for my Polks and varies depending on the genre of music you're playing.

2- Those settings aren't very well thought out with everything pushed above 0dB. The individual sliders need to be brought down to average zero or the preamp slider on the left need to be brought down to about -6dB. A lot of music (esp. from the iTMS) is recorded with artificially high presets, so when you boost it up like that (especially the 8kHz!!!) you're inevitably clipping/saturating the amplifiers. Clipping is a great way to kill your speakers:( There are some cases where a recording is very quiet and you need to push up the preamp, but for general use you don't want the preamp over 0dB- making the music louder is your amplifier's job.

Shoot, I think I should just leave it to "trebble booster" for now. It doesnt sound as good as the "perfect" but at least it wont kill my speakers.

You can leave it on "perfect", just bring that preamp slider down to -6dB or so. That'll keep it from clipping.

Bringing down the preamp will keep it from clipping correct?

Thats Perfect according to iTunes? I have mine almost the complete opposite, high at the low end, low at 320, high at 1k, low at 6k and then working up to high at the end again. And a never set the gain to above -4

I have these same speakers and have been very happy with them. The only problem I could see your eq settings causing would be clipping. If you amp any signal too much you can distort your sound. If you know what a sine wave looks like imagine chopping off the top and bottom. That's what's happening if you move any of those sliders too high on the eq. I've done some research to find the frequency response of these speakers and from that designed an eq preset that compensates for the imperfections of the speakers. Here's a link the eq you should use. http://userimage.gamespot.com/images/profile/9/8/22878529275306744596631519567289/sig_image.png

True, Winamp + Enchancer = WIN
