Interesting read. Used to think they were unstoppable with their exports, but I guess they are becoming less and less competitive with the rest of Asia.

Youdo remember there was a freaking huge earthquake, tsunami and nuclear reactorexplosions all at 2011's beginning in Japan? Show me any country that would even be exporting at ALL that is not Japan if that would happen to it.
I guess they'll catch up soon enough, maybe 2, 3 years and boom fully back at it.
The article addresses those points as well. They were showing signs of slowing long before any of those natural disasters. It's just that they are competiting with China and other asian markets that can produce the same goods for much lower prices. It's a major problem with globalization.Youdo remember there was a freaking huge earthquake, tsunami and nuclear reactorexplosions all at 2011's beginning in Japan? I think maybe they should invade China. Have they tried that yet?Engrish_Major

Their "invasion" of the U.S. ended with two of their major cities being nuked. How would invading China end any better? I would think it would end with Japan becoming a Chinese state...

or maybe they had a big effin earthquake this year lolz
Krelian-co
That, most likely, had the largest impact on their economy this year.
Can they lower the value of the yen to increase their exports?Lonelynight...and also make it cheaper for me to go there :P
Can they lower the value of the yen to increase their exports?LonelynightThat could be a problem. But the cost of labor is also higher in Japan than the surrounding regions. So it's all around more expensive to produce goods in Japan. That's a problem with globalization - developed countries should pay good wages but then it makes it harder for them to compete with countries that dont.
Don't forget about that their debt. Japan's economy hss been stagnant for the last 20 years and it has not gotten better and it will not get better at any points. From what I seen their government is inept and corrupted, because of that it will be much harder to solve their economic crisis.with declining population, and the rapid aging, it's probably going to get worse.

Remember when they said that Japan will overtake America as a number one economy of the world? Now look at how much they have fallen.

Who said that? They never had the population to overtake the US. In the 80's there were tons of people saying that. Look at the second part of Back to the Future, who was the boss of Marty, a Japanese. There were lot of people that thought Japan would be number 1 economy, think about the dominance of Sony, Toyota, and other major Japanese companies. There was even a book called "Japan as Number One."The Yen is worth about one US cent. How much lower can their currency go? For many decades, the Yen was traded at a much lower rate against the dollar than it is now, so the answer is much lower. Anyway, you can't compare the numeric representations like that. Just because you get more quantity of their currency vs less quantity of ours does not mean that one is necessarily worth more than the other. It's the relative buying power of one vs. the other that counts, not the magnitude of zeros behind the number. Edit - and anyway, even if you could, wouldn't 1 yen vs 1 cent be equal? They do not use fractions of their currency like we do, so 1Y = 1c would seem to be the most equal and convenient trade anyway.[QUOTE="Lonelynight"]Can they lower the value of the yen to increase their exports?Pirate700

Who said that? They never had the population to overtake the US.True, I mean Japan could be a bigger economy than USA, if its per capita GDP is comparable to Monaco or Luxemburg.
But realistically speaking it does not have that many people, and the population is still retiring and dying.
I'd still argue Japan is a more harmonious society though.

well now SONY is not nearly as powerful as Samsung and Apple, they've got no company in the league of Microsoft, IBM and Google.
and Toyota is quickly falling behind Volkswagen and GM in term of production, and soon, profit as well.

They're a more homogenous society without many of the social problems a more diverse nation would have.If Japan manages to shrink in a mostly harmless way then I think it is the hope of humanity. In this day and age shrinkage is good and growth is bad, economies and countries need to realize that growing forever is not possible and is bad for us and for the planet. We need to start thinking up systems that take into account how to shrink otherwise we are doomed. The current capitalist system doesn't contemplate shrinkage which is why I think it is so stupid and destined to fail under its own weight. If Japan shrinks well without going into fits of fear and rage over their future then I think we can call them a truly civilized nation.kuraimen
Damn, you really are retarded.

So you have no argument but dumb one liners? is that supposed to show how retarded I am or how retarded you are? You apparently aren't able to construct two consecutive sentences to make an argument.Japan and the Ancient Art of Shrugging

This is what I'm talking about. Apparently half the japanese wants to shrink and the other half wants to grow. I hope the side who wants a mature nation wins in the end.
