Old news, but fun nonetheless. Time to find out if playing god, bringing back ancient animals means they'll bring back... ancient diseases which will wipe us all out.

This in all likelyhood won't work. Best they can hope for is creating a functioning embryo, which in itself would be pretty impressive

The DNA they use will be from preserved tissue. It won't be any bacterial or viral DNA/RNA, so resurrecting ancient diseases is impossible.

I am pretty pumped. Mammoth seems safe enough to bring back and it would be pretty neat to see. Maybe my dream of riding a Pterodactyl to school will finally be realized.

A mammoth? How boring. Try bringing back something that, if escapes, could destroy cities and stuff. That's where the real fun lies.

Well, in my honest opinion, the people who mock the idea of it being a possibility are not the super genius scientists that are attempting it. This is the era of where there is a will there is a way. Chances are they already cloned something similar but did not get the results they wanted. So I basically get out of the article that within 5 years they will have a clone that actually resembles a wooly mammoth. Either way, whether you arefor it or against it, it is being done... so why not embrace it. They say that since the tissue is preserved they believe it can be cloned. Ok, 20 years ago people would not even be on the fence about the matter. Just about everybody would say it could not be done. On that note, I'm sure if this is a future success, that we can expect to see other species cloned. Possibly leading up to prehistoric zoo's, which I think would be awesome. If they can make this work, then they will not stop there. If it is possible to clone a mammoth, then eventually through some weird cross mutation gene transer find a way to bring back the last of the living dinosaurs.... and so on and so on. Chances are that if it is successfull then further advancements will be made. Either way though, even if does work out the way they hope, it will be many years down the road until the mammals and reptiles they clone look or act anything like the originals, because of the split gene pools. So maybe 5 to 6 generations down the road, we might actually see what the creatures of the past actually looked like and behaved... if the government and tree huggers dont find a way to shut it down first.

"After the mammoth is born, we will examine its ecology and genes to study why the species became extinct and other factors."

I'm pretty sure they're extinct because Humans hunted them to Extinction.

Also I know this is a bit off topic but I told my little brother that Jurassic park is real and it was based off a true story :P He's 12 and im pretty sure he still believes me.
