Wow, that's kind of random. Especially since the series is over and all.
Sorry if there's already a thread about this; I didn't see one, and the forum search didn't return anything.

That is sort of disturbing :? But I wonder why she presented this afterwards..........really pointless on her half.ShadowofTulkas
Probably because she wanted to keep the series free of any political/social commentary that could polarize readers... I mean, there are probably a lot of people who would have stopped reading Harry Potter if Dumbledore was revealed to be gay during the series. It's the sad truth of things...

I really can't imagine how she would fit it into the books, it would go something like this:
"Harry it is time for me to show you something I have never shown anyone else" said Dumbledore.
Dumbledore poured the silver bottle into the Pensieve and glanced at Harry.
"After you Harry"
Harry dived into the Pensieve and found himself in a room.
"Gellert...I...I love you..."
"I'm sorry Dumbledore I'm not gay."

Good point. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that she probably did this to bring attention back to her and the books. Obviously she likes the limelight.

Exactly. A mere publicity stunt to bring some limelight back on her and to try and sell more books for ones that have never purchased them and want to read for themselves and see if they can reveal for themselves that Dumbledore wasn't straight.

I honestly can't remember any hints of Dumbledore being gay in the books... wand-related innuendo aside...
Ok so one of her characters is gay,,,,SO F#$%ing what...I dont know why g@ y people consider this a victory..Im not agianst people following their desires or orientation or whatever they want to call it , But why the hell do they have to be PROUD about it and rub it in our faces.. Like what they didi the other day in that church in san fransisco........Now you see them all over the place, TV shows, Parades, stickers, ect...like its cool or something. Worst yet theres a campaign trying to pass these people off as normal and well adjusted....like i said not that i have anything aginst them but why make such a big deal about it...so youre gay or lesbian big deal!!!! ..... its not like their any more special than the rest of us and they keep going on and on about gay rights and achievements like they are somehow handicapped or chalenged in a way that the rest of us arent...or they deserve special rights...just for beining G @ Y ........
As for j k rowling.....its probably a stunt to appeal to a wider audience....enrage conservative groups....and thus enhance proffit..She could have stated this earlier, but it being a childrens book probably would have hindered its sales..so now that the series is sucessful, why not add a few twist..As an artist its here right (job) to do this, as a buisness woman ....its a sales strategy.... For G @ Y rights advocates its a (VICTORY)....
Ugh. I wish I could un-learn this... I don't like knowing this about the character.
I also think it's a little lame that Rowling wants to make the character gay but chose not to put that into the books. I wonder if it's that she wanted to have her controversy, but she didn't want to risk hurting book sales...
Probably... I'm glad that it isn't in the books; while I'm not anti-gay (far from it), it feels like kind of a forced detail that isn't really necessary or useful to the plot of the books.Ugh. I wish I could un-learn this... I don't like knowing this about the character.

Wow, even if it's true, it's incredibly irrelevent to the storyline, as there's no part where this would ever be of importance. :?

Yes, which is probably why it didn't come up. Personally I'm not at all surprised. Dumbledore, the most powerful man in Wizardom doesn't have, and never has had a significant relationship with a woman as far as the readers would know.
I figure The reason it came out now rather than while the books were being written is more of an attempt to avoid controversey and a publicity stunt. I mean she already had enough people riding her with the general theme of the book (the christian right) which was of course compounded when she killed cedric and showed the harder side of life and death in a childeren's book. Further, the entire book is about tolerance in the grand scale of things, but not in a way that forces the idea of tolerance down peoples throats. If she had revealed that Dumbledore was gay earlier, aside from the publicity chaos that would reign around the books for a period, it would have turned the books into a giant "BE TOLERANT" fest. Of course the subtlety would then be ruined and people would be reading it for political and idealogical reasons rather than entertainment. I don't think Rowling wanted that. As it is no one's gonna care by the end of next month since the books have alreaady been written.
Why would she say it at all? Simple, as an author one has a responsibility to one's characters, for once they are created, they tend to become their own person that the author must respect as much as any other individual or lose the character's personality. Rowling revealing Dumbldore's sexuality showed him the respect he deserved by forcing people to understand more completely who he is as a character.

She's one of the richest women in the world. I don't think she cares about attention...

Yes, because when we thought he was straight, he must have liked Hermionie. /sarcasm
Disturbing news. But I can't help but wonder why she would say this now, considering the series is over.Sora529
She probably did it as a joke for the fans. I would have released pointless information about my characters if it had been my series; just because I can.
I bet that article is fake.cryptosopoidium
It's the BBC... if the BBC is fake then the world will asplode.
