They are both amazing actors, yes, but who is better?

I'd say John Wayne by far. He was a patriot, an American icon, and a hero to many, many people (you can't get much better than those movies he did with dean martin). On top of that, he was a real life cowboy outside of acting.

Clint Eastwood has always had an "anti-hero" attitude that goes against the flow. But the problem is, many of his westerns made the average townsfolk look like wimps. That wasn't true, settlers had to have a lot of guts to do what they did. Look at "High Plains Drifter", for instance, John Wayne saw this, and even wrote Clint a letter about it.

But really, John Wayne created the cowboy stereotype. So calling him "cliche" is just stupid.

top John Wayne movies:

1. Rio Bravo

2. Sons of Katie Elder

3. True Grit

4. Chisum

5. The Searchers

Top Clint Eastwood movies:

1. High Plains Drifter

2. Dirty Harry

3. A fistful of dollars

4. The good, the bad and the ugly

5. For a few dollars more

the clint eastwood movies here made the townsfolk look like udder wimps, leaving the one brave cowboy to stand alone to the "bad guy". That wasn't accurate in the real Old West.

This whole thread is IMO, so flame me if you want.

I prefer Clint Eastwood, but that's mainly because I don't like old westerns. At least Clint had Dirty Harry and Unforgiven.

Clint Eastwood for sure. My dad even named me after him. He and my mother saw The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly the night before I was born. I was a really ugly baby, so ...

Whichever of the two you like better is a personal choice. Just remember John Wayne is the definitive western star. If it wasn't for him then Clint Eastwood would not have gotten very far. Even movies like Dirty Harry would not have been made if it wasn't for Clint Eastwood's western work.

I like both - why make me choose?

Wayne was awesome in The Green Berets and McClintock.

Wayne performed all of his own stunts, never used a double.

Only Eastwood could be Harry Callahan.

Clint Eastwood. I don't even think I've ever watched an entire John Wayne movie. I don't really care for his acting.

Clint Eastwood easily, even for western films. The outlaw Josey Wales, Pale Rider, and the Unforgiven....I'm sorry but I've never liked any movie with the Duke as much as those three.

I love both of 'em, but my favorite has always been Clint Eastwood(my favorite actor). Plus westerns being my favorite type of movies. My Dads collection of Clint Eastwood and John Wayne stuff is un-real.

My favorite Clint Eastwood movies are The Outlaw Josey Wales, A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, Two Mules for Sister Sara, Good, Bad, and the Ugly, Coogans Bluff, and Pale Rider. But I pretty much like 'em all, this was just a list of favorites. I'm actually watching For a Few Dollars More on AMC right now :D

My Favorite John Wayne movies are El Dorado, Rio Bravo, The Searchers, McLintock!, and Chisum.

Well they are both pretty mediocre actors, but Clint Eastwood is easily my personal favorite. The only good John Wayne films are The Shootist, The Searchers, Rio Bravo, and The Man who shot liberty Valance

When firing guns during filming, John Wayne blinked. Clint Eastwood didn't.

Clint Eastwood by a mile. John Wayn just isn't nearly as cool and he was in WAY too many movies.
