So I just bought a Droid Razr from Verizon Wireless on a 2 year contract, and I can't wait to get it (it'll be about a week before I actually get the phone, due to some annoying circumstances), but I have a quick question. I have been reading reviews, and though I am sure the phone will work great for me, I have been seeing some complaints about it glitching, dropping calls, and randomly shutting off/down. A short battery life I can live with, as smart power management can extend battery life for up to 50% longer, but gltiching and software failure (or horrendous call quality) are NOT something I can live with.

However, I have seen a number of people talk about returning their phones to get different ones. I thought this was odd, as a phone bought under contract seems like a semi-permanent investment (unless you wanna drop 350 to cancel your contract!). Now, I am not jumping the gun already planning to return the phone, but in the event that the phone fails on me, and I return it and the next one fails on me, does Verizon do any kind of returns on phones? For instance, I got a Droid Razr 16gb for 199, and if I am unsatisfied, can I return it and get an iPhone 4S 16gb at the same price? Furthermore, what of the 100 dollar warranty that I bought for the phone?

Thanks guys!

P.S. please avoid bashing the phone in this thread! I bought it because I liked it in store and 95% of the customer reviews are outstanding, and the last thing I want to hear right now is a ton of hate bashing on my new phone. Thanks!

EDIT: Please stop recommending that I trade in my Razr for a Razr Maxx or Nexus. I don't have an extra hundred dollars to spend, so if you are going to recommend a new phone, it has to be 200 dollars or less. That is why I chose the iPhone 4S 16gb model. So please please please please please, STOP RECOMMENDING THE NEXUS! Imo, from what I have seen, the difference between Nexus and Razr isn't worth 100 bucks anyway.

I would have waited for the Maxx but even still every phone has problems and is glitchy now and then. Also i dont think it comes with Ice Cream 4.0 but it should be soon and that alone will probably change the phone quite a bit. Then if you still wanted to you could root it but then you would still have problems of a different kind.

I have no idea what rooting is, but any idea as to my original query? Can you swap a phone under contract for another phone (and get your money back for the original phone)?

I think you have 14 days to return a phone from verizon. So if your really want to switch, I think you can. But, I would have waited for the razor maxx. But the razor is still a fantastic phone.

Okay, don't return your RAZR for an iPhone 4S. Return it for the Galaxy Nexus. Unlike other phones, Galaxy Nexus will receive upgrades straight from Google. You're guaranteed the latest versions of everything and extensive support without having to deal with Verizon bloatware. Galaxy Nexus has a 720p screen that looks absolutely beautiful. Its screen compliments the newest version of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), because there are no on-screen face buttons (that is no longer a necessity for the latest version of Android). All of your complaints about the RAZR, i.e. Android 2.3.2 (Gingerbread) are nullified with GNexus: it has a long battery life for a 4G phone and a replaceable battery, it hardly ever freezes (ICS is new but far more stable than previous versions of Android), and it feels sleek, responsive, and smooth. The phone itself is light, very thin (though not as thin as the Nexus it's certainly a lot thinner than the iPhone while still feeling comfy in your hand), and sturdy. I have friends with iPhones and RAZRs and Galaxy SIIs who are awestruck by my Nexus; it's a thing of true beauty. Numerous reviews are claiming it's the best Android phone ever made, and some are calling ICS better than iOS5. The only downside with the Nexus is the lack of expandable memory, but with 32GB of internal storage that shouldn't be a big problem, and with Google music and Verizon 4G LTE your music can be stored on a cloud network and played instantly. Check out the Galaxy Nexus. I guarantee that after trying both the iPhone and the GNexus in a store, you'll choose the latter. It's a real revolution for Android.

uh, no, lol... stock upgrades from google, 720p HD screen, better battery life and a replaceable battery, 32GB internal storage, to name a few. if you want a phone that craps on the iPhone 4S this is it.

also, do you really think ICS is going to be smoother and more user-friendly when ported to a handset that was never designed for it? the galaxy nexus is inherently made for ICS and will have a longer support life than any other android phone on the market.

Forgot the 5MP camera on the nexus versus 8 on the Razr

Also, ICS still has bugs. Who cares if it has it now.

Lastly, the Razr has 16GB internal w/ 16GB preinstalled. The nexus doesn't have an sd slot which means the razr can go up to 48GB.

I would probably still want the Razr Maxx. Something like 21.5hrs of talk time, 15hrs of video. It's still slimmer than the Iphone and it really is a phone that lasts you all day easily.

Pixel density doesn't really equate to a higher-quality camera. The camera on both are decent at best, and the RAZR's camera isn't exactly the sharpest thing either. It's still blurry and noticeably lower-quality compared to the iPhone's camera. Anyway, the Nexus has a good camera that does the job; 8MP camera on the RAZR doesn't make up for the dismal battery life, sub-HD screen, and irreplaceable battery. ICS works fine and the bugs are relatively minor kinks; they don't keep it from being the best OS available for a handset. And with Galaxy Nexus being updated straight from Google instead of RAZR having to rely on Motorola, you're guaranteed long support with instant access to the newest updates. I can't think of any advantages the RAZR has over the Nexus save for it feeling nice and being very thin. You have a point with the presence of expandable storage for the RAZR, that's probably the Nexus' biggest flaw, but on one hand 32GB is plenty for a smart phone and with the speed of Verizon 4G LTE storage for your music and videos on Google cloud service is reliable.

Theres nothing wrong with choosing the razor over the nexus. They each have their pros and cons. I personally think the razor has a better design than the nexus. Even though I prefer IOS to android, I wouldn't get a 4s. 3g just does not compare to 4g. The speed difference is remarkable. I'd just stick with the razor.

Dismal battery life? It's only 70 milliamps less than the Nexus. By the logic, the Nexus has dismal battery life compared to the Bionic. You're making too much of a big deal out of something as insignificant as 70 milliamps. Also the Razr also runs on Verizon's 4G LTE. :? I don't see how thats a plus for the Nexus.

And the screen on the razor is awesome. IDK why he keeps trashing it. It is a really beautiful screen. Is it as nice as the nexus? No, but it is still really bright and has great colors and a remarkable viewing angle. The razor is a great phone, you'll enjoy it. I wish I could get it. I'm still using an original droid x, which is laggy as hell.

You should call Verizon to see what their return policy is.

Extended warrenty is a waste I think, if it works for a year it's not gonna fail you. Just don't take it in the bathroom and let it fall in the toilet or something.

Is this your first smartphone?

Basically what happens is, when a phone is relatively new everyone raves about it, then a couple months down the line there is something better and you don't feel special anymore.

Keeping up with OS version is a waste of time, usually it adds no new functionality.

Eventually you get to the point where :

- The phone is such an integral part of your life that you can't live without it

- You're no longer impressed by anything newer because you already have e-mail and texting and gps navigation, I mean what is a newer phone gonna do for me, scratch my nuts? 3g? 4g? I don't even use the internet browser hardly ever, only when I need to find something, an address or something.

- So you just keep it for as long as the phone doesn't die, add a nice protective cover, etc.

- When you get your SECOND smartphone, then you become a smarter shopper, and start caring more about not needing to have a contract and getting a lower priced phone, because they all pretty much do the same thing. I found out that when I'm under contract, I pay a higher price for service than if I had no contract. These companies aren't stupid for giving you an $850 phone for $199, they make up the money in other ways.

This guy pretty much hit the nail on the head :P I work for Radio Shack and we deal with Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint (we do NOT deal with T-Mobile anymore). And phones for us is a PRETTY big deal for us here. Trust me I know my stuff when it comes to phones. They friggen TEST us on phones to see if we know wtf we are talking about for when we sell them. If you don't want to take his word for it, then take mine. The Nexus truly is the BEST phone that is currently out. Lastly, (I hope i don't sound like I am advertising, I am just giving some bro tips) get your phone at Radio Shack. We're (ironically) cheaper than the carrier stores. We're usually 50-100 bucks cheaper on like 85+% on the phones. We transfer the contacts over for FREE. And unlike in the carrier stores, you can trade in your old phone and get credit towards the new phone you're getting.

This. It'll be time for me to upgrade from my original Droid X soon, and this is what i had my eye on so far. Plus I'm still grandfathered into their unlimited data plan, so there's that.

next time I get a phone, perhaps I will consider Radio Shack... but to the guy who you said hit the nail on the head, here is something that I am going to repost in my original. I CANNOT TRADE IN MY RAZR FOR A NEXUS! Okay? Please, ffs, stop recommending this. Wanna know why? I don't have an extra hundred bucks? I got the 16gb Razr for 199, which means the 299 nexus would be an extra hundred that I don't have! I have watched reviews, and the differences are damn near negligable, and NOT worth 100 bucks. This is my first smartphone, so honestly, the fact that it does so much cool stuff will be enough of an improvement for me!

If it's your first smartphone, get an iphone. The user experience is better, IMO. Everything is alot more integrated and feels more intuitive. Some things you might want to consider though is whether or not ringtones and bluetooth tranfer are important to you. Iphone doesn't do that. Also, the iphone doesn't have the gps that talks to you. You have to buy an app for that. What will you be using your phone for most of the time? If it's just calling, texting and web browsing, get an iphone.
