I was randomly jogging about 30 minutes ago (I'm a nightowl) and as I was running by a house I heard some really nasty shouting. I couldn't make out any words but someone sounded really mad and violent and I heard some odd noises that sounded muffled, wasn't quite sure what they were. I also saw a ladder propped up next to an open window. Mind you this is at 2 something AM. At first I told myself it was none of my business (which it still isn't) but this could have been something... a man hitting his wife or kids, a break in and the robber was armed or just some crotchety old man yelling at his TV. I instinctively ran back to my house about half a mile away and reported a disturbance to the police.

I can hear sirens out in the neighborhood now and while I don't know if they're related to what I reported, considering I live in a small town of about 1300 it's safe to say that they most likely are.

OT what would have you done in my circumstance?

Given what you said you saw and heard and the time, I'd say you did a good job.

I actually thought that might be a possibility.

I would have kept running but when I saw the open window and ladder I kind of freaked.

Maybe the cops could join in and have an even kinkier roleplaying session.

Better to be safe than sorry. I don't think you could have lived with the regret if something did end up happening.

I think it depends on what "calling the cops" means.

That is, there have been times that I've seen things that, to me, seemed REALLY suspicious. In those times, I did call the police. However, I didn't call 911. I called the precinct phone number and start off by telling the officer something along the lines of, "I'm not sure if this is something or nothing, but I noticed/saw/heard......" This way,I don't think they send the whole department over there with guns drawn. Of course, things may be different in different towns.

Well nothing was lost by calling them. If everything is ok, the cops will just tell them to keep the noise down and leave. No biggy.

Normally I would have checked it out myself but given the circumstances you were more then likely unarmed so calling the Police was a good move.

I think you definitely did the right thing. If there's a ladder against the house it may have been a break-in. Worst that could happen is you wasted a bit of the cop's time; best that could happen is you saved somebody's life.

Admittedly I dont know you or what you've experienced, but being constantly armed doesn't sound like it can lead to much good.

Nothing wrong with carrying something to protect yourself. I carry at least 7 blades on me at all times (not a gun guy, have no problem with them they just aren't my thing) to feel it odd to need something to protect yourself is foolish....especially with people doing crazy stupid stuff due to poor economy.

I do understand where you're coming from, I mean I've known friends to do the same, all I'm saying is when one is armed it seems to lead to an escalation of an already bad situation and ultimately someone being critically injured when in most cases it could be avoided (albeit the victim or the perpetrator, neither is necessary).

Most crooks won't stay and fight if you flash a weapon, whatever they want from you is in most cases not worth their life.

Besides what if they want to do something crazy like rape my gf? I'd much rather have a dead rapist then live with the fact that I was totally unable to protect some one.

The presumption you're making though is that you're going to come out the victor, you have no idea what is going to happen. And yeah sure maybe it's not worth their life but I'd say most "crooks" aren't as rational as most regular people and think they can handle themselves a lot more, thus leading to the escalation of an already bad situation which I was talking about. And as you said yourself, you've never been in any really bad situations whereas I'd say the average guy who is going to roll you has.

Would you rather find out the person was beaten to death and you did nothing ?

I made the same call a few years back. At 3am I was awakened by someone screaming at the top of their lungs. Our windows were closed and you could hear it. I went to the side of my house facing my neighbour and listened. I heard him absolutely raging nonsensically saying stuff like "THEY'RE ALL AGAINST ME AND YOU ARE TOO YOU'RE ALL PLANNING STUFF AGAINST MEEEEEE!" I could hear his girlfriend whimpering.

Called the police immediately. When they arrived he mistakenly and amusingly mouthed off to this cop who was probably close to 7' tall and just as big. I watched the cop pick him up by the throat and throw him from the top of the 4 stairs down to the ground. Then proceed to pummel him. That was it for that neighbour.

I can't say you might not get away unscathed, as again those likely to perpetrate wouldn't be as rational as you or I, but your chances would be higher if you simply cooperated. Sure, you might get your phone and money stolen but you get away unscathed. Majority of the time they just want to be done with you and get away with your valuables.

You did the right thing. Too many people do nothing and regret it later. It might have wasted the cops time but it also might have saved someone (or at least calmed whoever was yelling down.)

Ya done good. :D
