I've just finished the final episode of Battlestar Galactica(the reimagined series) and I must say that I am quite sad that it's over now :(

I now need a new tv show to take up my nights and some of my days, I've seen all of Stargate SG-1, I have Atlantis, but haven't really gotten around to watching it, and I also have Farscape, which I watch now and again....so are there any other shows kind of like BSG or Stargate that deserve some attention? Thanks!

Watch Firefly! I can't recommend that series enough, despite its brief run it is absolutely incredible. However, Its much more in a Stargate SG-1/SGA vibe than BSG; Firefly is more comedy than drama and it doesn't take itself too seriously.

Otherwise I would say you should finish up SGA, that series is fantastic and in the latter season, IMO even better than SG-1.

O the one other thing I can recommend is SGU(Stargate Universe). SGU is much much more of a human drama set in space however. There are action sequences, but the show is much more focused on the interaction between the crew members on the ship. If you do end up watching SGU please give it more of a chance than just the first 5 or 10 episodes. Those are the weakest part of SGU, the later half of season 1 is great and season 2 is even better. Shame it got cancelled after that.

Decent show. However, they obviously wrote episode by episode and had no real idea where the story was going. And it obviously ended abruptly.

SGU was good but it never really picked up at at all. SG-1 is my favorite with Atlantis as a close second.

IBattlestar Galactica is probably one of my favorite TV shows towards the end I couldn't help, but shake the feeling that they didn't quite plan anything out. All of the conclusions given to the different story archs seemed pretty random. Still ended up being a pretty good series finale overall. I would definitely finish watching SG:A I actually ended up liking that more than I did SG1.

SGU is worth watching if your a big fan of stargate and need some level of closure for the franchise. I really didn't likeSGU, I felt that the main reason it got cancelled because they didn't make any of the characters ,besides Eli who was a support character, likeable. SG1 and SG:A lasted as long as they did because the characters in those shows were memorable.

So you say SGU is worthwhile?

The problem with SGU was that it wasn't really Stargate. They tried to make it too much like BSG. And the whole "they can track us with it" plot point seemed like a flimsy excuse for the writers to ignore the trademark Stargate.

By far my all time favorite Sci-Fi series. Easily.

The raptors the humans fly is the closest thing i've ever seen to something that could exist as a space fighter. Given our current tech.

some of the drama near the end got annoying i felt, but still two thumbs up from me. Cannot recommend it enough.

You mean the Vipers? They're cool I guess. Though I think the fighters in B5 have them beat for realism.

*self face-palm* yes the vipers, i forgot the name of human fighter ships. I've only seen a little bit of Babylon 5, i should watch that one. I also still need to finish Farscape.

BSG is one of the greatest shows ever. I too was sad when the series ended. Like many others have stated, Firefly should be your next stop. It's a great sci-fi series as well despite being cut short with only 12 or so episodes.

I can agree with the sentiment that SGU isn't really "Stargate", its definitely a large departure from the formula used in SG-1/SGA. That being said I personally found the overarching story and the conflict/sentiment between the crewmates to be quite enjoyable. A lot of Stargate fans got turned off in the first 5-10 episodes and I can't disagree that those episodes were pretty weak. I think the main reason it got cancelled really is because(and really any type of show can suffer from this) it uses an arc story format. Basically you have to have watched from the beginning to know whats going on in the main plot points. It wasn't like SG-1 or SGA where you could just tune in for an episode, miss an episode and then tune again and not have any issues.

People lead busy lives these days and dont' really want to commit to having to have to watch an entire series to enjoy the show. This is why the most popular televsion shows these days are episodic stories like sitcoms like HIMYM or Big Bang Theory or crime shows like Criminal Minds or CSI. People can miss a couple episodes and not become lost.

The arching story doesn't bother me. In fact I often enjoy this form of story telling, when it is done right. My problem is really with the tone of the series. It's all dark and edgy. SG1 and Atlantis had their moments, but usually they were more light-hearted adventures with lots of tongue-in-cheek humor.

yeah, the only thing I really disliked was

SPOILER

...how Starbuck became such a whiny sob story. Here was this cute, kickass tomboy for the first couple seasons, then all of a sudden she starts having these issues and wah wah wah.

I understood how it went with the plot and appreciated it, I just didnt like how they transformed one of my favorite characters.

Big recommendation for Firefly as well. I've been finished with the Stargates/BSG for a while now, and I'm looking for another space opera to sink my teeth into. I've heard good things about Babylon 5.

My only qualm now, and tell me if this is you too, is that BSG ruined all other space battles for me. Those are the best, most harrowing battles I've seen on television. I can't stand sound in space (at least without that muffled effect) in other shows, and I crave those dizzying camera zooms and tracking shots.

BSG is among my top 5 shows. Also, watch Babylon 5. Unlike BSG, the entire 5 season story arc was all planned out from the start.

"Babylon 5." Once you get past the first season (and watch two of the alien races swap roles), and get into the actual main storyline, it gets very wild in a hurry. I thought season 5 was a big letdown, though.

Watch the spin-off series Caprica. It is very good, almost as good as BSG I think. They Ended it after 1 season though.

The main reason i thought both BSG and Caprica were both great was because of the mood and setting and atmosphere that they gave off. They just had their own distinct personalities that were unlike anything else on TV.

Think I read a cracked article about that. Was true to some extent.

Still one of the best shows I have ever watched and loved every minute of it. I've watched the whole thing through twice now, been meaning to watch it a third time but really don't have the time.

Soooo, Babylon 5? The thing is...I don't know if I'll be able to find something that even compares to BSG! Also, how does B5 look? Does it "look" old or is the CGI on par with BSG or something similar?

B5 is literally the first television series to generate its visual effects primarily using CGI. It's definitely crude by today's standards, though impressive for something that aired in the early nineties.
