I've been in retail for 5 years, maybe 6... that's sad... anyways, it's not tough working in retail or in sales. You just have to make sure to leave any issues and problems at home (like any job) but it shows in your work ethic. And don't get down on yourself if you don't sell something or are having a bad day with customers, some shoppers literally, i feel like, they wake up and are on a war path already. They come into the store and are already hating their life, and i just want to tell them to go home and stop trying to make my day as horrible as yours. So pay them no mind, smile, nod and just try to help everyone out as best you can. You can't do much more than that. :)
And have fun, really. If you're not having fun and you're not in a good mood, humanity is rather observant, they notice. ;)
But more than that, Seriously, make fun with it. Just have a good time. Retail isn't difficult and it's not meant to be stressful. It should be fun. Scope out your surroundings, figure out others moods and personalities and go from there, make friends and have a good time. Or work will be a pain every day.
Your patience will be tested. Just remember to be polite and understanding to customers and you will have no problems. When i say understanding i mean if they don't know what kind of ink they need don't lose it on them or given them dirty looks. I seen salespeople make rude or demeaning remarks because of that.
Learn to put up with people having a bad day and then putting it off on you because you're the nice guy taking it in like a sponge. Learn to put up with people who aren't as technically saavy as you are. Learn to put up with people who think they know more than you do and think they could do a better job.
You should probably make sure you learn the pros and cons of what you sell and be honest when someone asks for your opinion and don't just try to go for the big sale. Overall, don't let any negativity lessen your own positive attitude. Be excited to go to work, and know that all the misery you go through is worth it for that paycheck.
Don't be nervous. I've been working in retail for 4 years and literally it is a breeze. Whilst I'm not working in sales (I work in a supermarket), the same principles apply. Don't be nervous, don't get disheartened, be nice to your co-workers, try your hardest, and, most importantly, have fun.
Also, don't get on the bad side of your manager, otherwise you'll never get off it. In retail though, I've found higher-up managers in the store are hardly there for more than 12 months, so you get a clean slate once the new one comes in. Know your rights and stand your ground, but don't be a jackarse about it.
Also a good tip - as long as the shop looks good it's all good. We had the state manager come around and the shop presentation was good, so we got a good wrap, however the department next to us had crap presentation and he looked deeper into them and found out all their wrong-doings. We were actually worse than what they were, but because our presentation was good they didn't bother to check any deeper.
Make sure you ask everyone at least once, "Were you looking for something particular?", "Have a question?" or "Can I help you with something?". I hate being ignored when I AM looking for help, there are a few associates busy with something, and some lone guy walks by, SEES me and keeps walking.
It's all about customer service. Do that right and the rest will follow.
Hey man, i work at staples, im a night crew man though but i can help you out. The biggest thing you have to worry about is selling the plans with products, if you can do that it is a breeze.
The biggest thing though is the cheap jerks who will try to negotiate prices with you like you can lower the price for them, best thing to do is get your supervisor or manager ASAP or before you know it they are calling you names and making you try to look like a tool.
I went from construction to retail so i know what it's like to be dropped in a pond and told to "swim or sink" with the fishes. Overall just smile and if someone gets ticked off at you for any reason just say "Have a good day sir/mam."
Good luck man, oh and stay away from cashier those staples rewards are idiotic. :)
