I"ll keep this short and sweet, I have about $1100 saved up for a laptop and I wanted to know what you guys think is a good one out there right now. I'm thinking of getting a macbook because I'm a full time student but I know other brands are just as good. Any tips or suggestions are welcome. I just want some second opinions or ones to look into when I go shopping around at the local stores. I will mainly use this for media(photos, video) purposes and school work.

Thanks!8)

I recently purchased the Gateway NV55S05u for $400. I couldn't recommend it enough.

You sacrifice some CPU power over an Intel i7 (and in some cases even the i5) but it does a handy job using the AMD A8 APU. The real benefit comes from the graphics chip in the processor because it allows for a huge improvement over the Intel integrated graphics while maintaining the battery life of an integrated solution. Plus, since it's an AMD chip it's hundreds less than a similar Intel solution.

Won't have enough battery life for a full day or enough power for engineering/tech subjects. There's no laptop that will be perfect for every student. The Samsung series 9 and Elitebook 14" are pretty good if you don't need to do any 3D modelling however they both cost a huge amount.

Since you already have 1,100 dollars saved up, you could go for a MacBook 13'' for $999. Or, if you want to save up a few hundred more, you could go for the nicer models, the MacBook Air 13'' and the MacBook Pro 13''.

I would just get a dell since you're not going for anything crazy spectacular. I wonder if that free xbox deal is still going on.:P

I recommend you check out the Dell Refurbished store. I got my Alienware there at about an $800 discount, and the thing was brand new.

I don't doubt you do love your Asus. I always do get mixed up between them and Acer though. I know one rocks and one sucks, but can never remember which is which.

I use a MacBook Air for about the same things you aim to use a laptop for. It's extremely efficient, reliable, and lightweight. I average about a 8 hour battery life on it. You will not be disappointed.

Well, I recomend

Macbook

Macbook air(if you want the ultra thin thing, but less power)

I would not recomend the 13in Macbook pro, as it has the same internals as the Macbook(but 100ish dollars more, after rebate)

Some key notes:

* make sure to get the student discount, will save you50-200$

*get the minimal ram option, then upgrade after purchase yourself, saves you alot of $$$

*make sure to check Apple release date of last macbook/pro to see if they are about to release new mode

Currently love my macbook:P

Macbook IMO is a waste of mone. $1100 is a lot of money. You can get a Alienware but then for a student too much bulky to be lugging around. I recomment you getting Lenovo Y570 if you want to play games and study on it too. Comes for around $800. Else get a $500 ThinkPad which will be decent, light and have everything you need besides gaming.

I have a Toshiba for 5 years now?.. still works like the first day I bought, cheap and slow for what I paid for. that's all I cared.

I'm sorry but macbook is for people into apps and things like that. One day you'll be trying to install textbook software or software you need and you won't be able to install anything due to compatibility issues with the mac. I admit its fast and safer, but in the end I just think its for people who can't or don't know how to protect themselves from viruses. I've had an old laptop (pc btw) for 5 years at one point, and have never gotten a virus on it due to my virus protection software and safety precautions. Macbook is good for surfing the internet, but not much else.

Well, it depends what you want to do with it, but generally I'd suggest the Macbook Air 13 inches, if you can save a bit more. I know people will tell you they're overpriced and not as powerfull as other laptops, and it's true, but the beauty of a Mac is it's simplicity and it's reliability. I've had my imac crash only twice in 4 yars, and once was my fault, I ****** up the hard drive's logic sector while messing around with Bootcamp. If you really need your laptop for your studies, you know it'll work when you need it. It's not like a Windows PC where you have to actually go out of your way to keep it malware and viruses free, clean your registry to make sure it does not slow down, and format twice a year because windows just crapped on you. Last time I purchased a PC was 5-6 years ago, and I'm not going back for a long while (if Apple ever becomes as unstable, that is).

There are two types of i5's and i7's. Older gen i processors used old architecture. Some examples are i5-330M, 380M etc. Newer generation i processors use Sandy Bridge architecture which is way faster and has a better MMU like i5-2410M etc.

All I was saying was that there are different gen's of processors. But still that isn't the issue. Issue with Mac's are that they are way overpriced for the hardware they provide. Plus not enough flexibility. If you want a laptop that is light and look pretty, fine get a Mac. But when it comes to functionality its where other laptops come in. Sure you have to worry about malware and it crashes some time. But when you go to college and want to use certain softawer and you won't be able to cuz there is only windows version available and mac version is still not available in App store then you will be at loss. When in college functionality is what matters other than stuff looking pretty

HP Touchsmart tm2t if you are interested in writing your notes with your laptop. Otherwise, get any $400 laptop and just buy a 2nd battery.

depends on your use. will it be spending most of it's time on your desk or will you be traveling with it a lot? will you be close to a source of power much of the time or not? are you looking for a desktop replacement or a supplement? will you be bringing it to all your classes or ( gasp! ) taking notes by hand?

It depends greatly on what you plan to be studying. I've got a 15 inch Macbook Pro and I love it, however I wouldn't recommend purchasing one if all you plan to do are basic things with the laptop. If you are going to do programming though, then I'd definitely recommend getting one since they're solid machines and run in Unix. Otherwise, I'd recommend just getting a standard laptop and saving some money. I can't really help you with recommendations for other laptops since I only know about Macbooks.

You've had laptops from all those companies?

Anyway, I find Acer and Sony to have great choices... also Asus and Lenovo. But the spec rests entirely on what you need the laptop for.

It's still overpriced.

The UX31 has twice the ram, a faster Core i5 2557M, twice the SSD space, 6-hour battery life, HDMI out and is $1099.

It cost $1299 for a MacBook Air with the same specs.

Firstly Macs don't allocate full resources to Windows boot. Second in the ed if you are using more of Windows than Mac OS then there was no sense in buying a Mac in first place

I got a Dell. It works well.

Anyway, about it, the model is an Inspiron 15. I got it for around $500. It came with Windows 7 64-bit installed, plus a handful of additional programs. It isn't a top of the line model by a longshot, but it's enough to handle everything I need to do for school at the moment. If you're doing 3d modeling, you'll probably want something better.

Asus lately has been making the best laptops for awhile now, I'd go with them
