I'm a cop. I've had laser eye surgery before I joined so I could get in. I used to have to wear glasses or contacts to be able to see. Now I have better that 20/20 vision...I think 20/10 to be exact. It's been a few years since I was studying laser eye surgery. There were two kind of surgeries. One was where they cut your eye open part-ways and zappedthe underside of the "flap" and the exposed cornea, and the other was where they zap the eye directly. Either one is good, but you tend to get better results with the first one variety of surgery.
If you don't mind, I'd like to make a few suggestions about the timing of the surgery.
1. Get your surgery about a year or more before starting police training. Any less than that, and you likely won't be able to get peppersprayed. While this may sound funny and sound like a good thing, being peppersprayed in training REALLY helps when you have to explain you know how it feels to a defense attorney while on the stand.
2. Do a lot of research into the doctors and the clinic that performs the surgery. Go for the very best you can find, even if you have to take out a large loan for it. You don't want to get a wish-washy clinic who screws up on the surgery, cause then not only can you NOT get into the police force, you're just f*cked in any other career path too.
3. This is an aside from the whole surgery thing. Make sure you know it is what you really want when you say you want to be a cop. There are a lot of downsides to being a police officer.Way more paperwork/office duties than you would expect, you are hated by a great many people just because of the uniform you wear, the public is eager to crucify you, and your friends may have trouble seeing you as their buddy and not as a cop. There are really really greataspects to being a cop, though...I just wanted to point out that it isn't all roses.
Goodluck man!
