http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ESP-LTD-KH202-Kirk-Hammett-Signature-Electric-Guitar?sku=516639&src=3WFRWXX&ZYXSEM=0&CAWELAID=26043310

Good ESP that is under $500. I'm a self-taught guitarist, but there are videos online if you don't want lessons with an instructor.

I recommend getting an instructor. It really depends how devoted you are and how fast you pick up on everything though. I myself have been trying to teach myself but i keep quitting. might decide to take some lessons over summer break.

1) Depends on the music. Don't just follow random recommendations. Base your purchase on the type of music you wish to play.

2) To teach yourself, learn to play your favorite songs and practice scales.

Don't learn an the electric guitar!

It is always best to learn on an acoustic, preferably a Classical guitar.

If you don't like acoustic music, you'll be far less motivated to learn on it.

He doesnt have to play Neil Diamond.

I have never meet a single person who was any good at the guitar and didnt start with the acoustic and I know a lot of guitarists (myself included).

um sorry dude but if u dont have calesc(sp?) built up on ur finger tips it will be harder on acoustic because the strings are much thicker than electric. so u will be ahead to go electric then if ur interested in classical music, get an acoustic

I would learn some Green Day or Beatles songs first. Most of them are easy enough to figure out on your own, and help you learn chords. Also practice a lot of scales.

get a good guitar(esp/ibanez/epiphone)and a good amp (line 6/marshall)and go to 911tabs.com(or other tab site) and find tabs 4 bands and songs you like an try to play them.also try and increase the dificulty of the songs slowly.just remember you will be pretty rubish for at least the first month but dont give up.

im self taught,iv been playing for about 2 years and i can now play nearly all the lamb of god/caliban/deftones songs that iv atempted

also if u want to get some effects an stuff get a line 6 pod
