Have you ever heard or listened to this musical?

It was one of my favorite musicals growing up, my ma would put the CDs on repeat and I practically have most of it memorized. The conflict between Jean valJean and Javert is too good, and all of it got engrained into my system.

Have you heard it, do you like it?

I've seen it several times. The first time was on Broadway in the Summer of 1991. I then saw it again in Houston, Texas sometime around 1999-2001. Later I saw it at the London West End in the February of 2002. Finally, I took my niece to see it for her 11th Birthday in Roanoke, Virginia circa 2003.

So yes, I've seen it many times. I also keep several recordings of it, my favorite being the concert performance from London in the 1990s.

I love the book (though it's a marathon read), so I expected to love the musical. And I did -- let's just say that I am "less miserable" for having seen so many times.

I was actually surprised by how much of the book they were able to capture in the musical, given that some movie versions are more abbreviated.

Heh, well if you are referring to the musical, it's not an opera, at least by this opera fan's rather strict standards. It's a pretty darn good musical though.

I thought the play itself was boring. Has some good music, though. On My Own is one of the best musical theatre songs out there, IMO.

Read the novel back in high school, saw the film a few years ago. I had no idea they had even made a musical about it.

Read the book and it was amazing. Sang the sangs in my high school choir and they were beautiful. Never seen the opera or the movie though...

That musical is the reason I started singing.

I intend to play Javert. Several times.

Got dragged to the musical when I was a kid. I have to admit, it's got a great soundtrack.

Score. Not soundtrack. Soundtrack is the recording of a film score. /pedant

'Salright. Hoo, boy, I frequent this one musical theatre forum, and people get really annoyed if you refer to a cast recording as a soundtrack. Heh.

I need to read the book. I listened to an abridged audio version all the way through, and then I picked up a copy at the library and got about a hundred pages into it before realizing it too was an abridged version and decided to get a copy of the whole thing, which I haven't even gotten more than fifty pages into and Valjean hasn't even been introduced because the story is currently focusing on the kindly bishop.

Also, this November they're releasing the broadcast of the 25 anniversary concert from this month. And it stars Nick Jonas as Marius...

Wow! Didn't know there were other Les Mis fans here :) My freshman of college I got addicted to watching performances from the 10th Anniversary concert on youtube... such great songs. Philip Quast's Javert is so damned good. It's a great story too, I haven't read the book yet but I've seen various film adaptations.

I've been wanting to read it, but I'm not sure if I'm confident in my dedication enough to start it.

I'm not a fan of any of those except for the first one. Even then, Sweeney Todd has a few grating moments for me.

Chess is a musical that literally has no weak points.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that having numerous conflicting versions is a bit of a problem. Great source of my annoyance at "Candide."

Also, what's wrong with Camelot and Parade?

Eh, all I need is one definitive version. The latest concert recording is by far the best, and will eventually hit the circuit as a production.

There's nothing wrong with Camelot and Parade, just not as interesting to me personally.
