Lately, I have noticed my severe LACK (I mean I haven't read on my free time in about 3 - 4 years) in reading lately and me being a self proclaimed "intellectual", you pretty much have to read to acquire knowledge for debates and discourse.

I now either turn to saving up my $20 week allowance (no job) to purchase my favorite novella, graphic comics and random reads...

or I go to the Library...I have always hated the library...I just hate the fact that I have to return the book after I am finished with it, always deterred me away from the Library...I love to keep things as collectibles :(

What would you suggest I do?

What do you prefer?

  1. Library
  2. Purchasing
  3. Borrowing from a friend
  4. Hi-jacking the Barnes and Nobles Trucks
  5. Reading is for chumps

Also, what books would you recommend to a fellow who loves; documentaries, love stories (not the sappy type), action, suspense and science-fiction!

Thanks OT! (Also, long time no see) :P

I won't be visiting the library until I run out of classics I like in my families collection.

I like to have a personal library and a library I can use for more in depth research. As an example, in my college of 125+ books I have a lot of information about Jesus. However, this in no way compares the the wealth of research I can do at my seminary's library (three floors of books about Jesus = mindstorm's earthly heaven). I love doing research...

I like to buy my books. But I'll take any of those methods as long as I get to read.

Books, made from trees, are becoming obsolete. I only buy collectibles these days.

I consider it a great resource. I usually check out 2 to 4 books at a time. I do buy books that I deem necessary for my own personal collection (mostly history related books).

I purchase most books used for Research if I'll be needing them for awhile. If it's less than a week or Two I go to the Library.

I almost never go to the library, the only thing I ever use it for is for school resources. If it is anything that actually interests me, I buy it.

I owe money to the library so they don't let me visit ;(

And the local librarys latest books are usually circa 1970. New books are put in reference and cannot be checked out.

I tend to read at boarders. They don't ask me to leave or kick me out. Sure I can't leave with the book without paying but I've never had problems reading it there.

How about all of the above? Go to the library and check a few things out. If a friend has any suggestions, take them into consideration. Purchase only if you've already read the material and would enjoy a copy of your own for a re-visit at a later date.

I have to purchase. Most of the books I read you aren't going to find in the library.

I take too many books out from the library at one time for me to read. I'm a freakin Bogart. And since the 3 weeks they give you isn't long enough, I renew them like three times (w/e the max is). So for all of you who *hate* the guy who took the ONE book you wanted, and you keep checking to see if it's in and 3 months later it's still out -- that's me.

Books are expensive. Textbooks are mutha#$%^& overpriced. I buy the ones I need and try to find used online or used book stores.

I love the library, since that's where I work. I can watch a ton of movies and listen to a ton of CDs, and of course, read a ton of books, all for FREE. Man, why would you want to go back to paying for media after that?

I rent and buy books, but never expensive ones. They always have to be second hand if I buy them.

it's a bit disconcerting about how many people shrug off the library...I thought it would be only me, but it seems that is not the case.

1 through 4. I was just at my library today, they fixed the binding on a leatherbound book of mine for free.

Seriously people waste way too much money renting movies. The library usually has the latest films along with classics. I found so many from the Criterion collection. You know, the ones that are about $35 and can't be found in any rental place.

I've been meaning to go down to my local library at the college to sign up. Books are too expensive to purchase every single one that i want to read or find interesting.
