Do you believe in life after death?

Maybe, I'm not sure. I don't know about Heaven but I think something happens. Maybe it's just hard for me to wrap my mind around not being able to think anymore after death.

me too. i'm not religious, and i dont really believe in heaven/hell, but there's gotta be something, right*??
eh, i guess i'll find out when i get there.
*please note this is a rhetorical question.
I don't believe in life after death, or anything for that matter. My guess is that I'll just rot in the ground and my consciousness will cease to be. But I don't know for sure, so I'm not going to bother believing in that either.Blood-Scribe
amen to that
with that said, why does the concept of "ceasing to exist" bother people? You didnt exist before you were born, what makes ceasing to exist so bad? It is not like you would be aware of it.
Its just funny because every now and then someone will ask or we will talk about this, and I will tell them what I think happens, and they get depressed or try to convince me otherwise. This is the only life we (likely) get, folks, make the most of it and dont count on another one following it.
Though, to be honest, Gandalf talking about the afterlife to Pippin (or was it Merri?) in the last LOTR movie when theyre getting beseiged maybe me feel all warm and fuzzy. I can totally see the appeal of the afterlife.
Although to be undead, like a vampire, would be much, much better imo.

The thing is, I'm really not scared of dying because I realize that every living thing dies.
Now that I think about it, it's like that scene in the Lion King. I really don't mind if I became part of the Earth when I die, if there is no afterlife.
Possibly. That or it's just a dreamless sleep, which is pretty scary.Ghost_702
Why would that be scary? I don't get why people think that having no consciousness of their current state while they're dead suddenly makes something scary or depressing.

But why?
But why?

Because you'll be dead, never to live ever again. If that doesn't sound scary to you, nothing else will.
But why?

Maybe it's just that we have no control over it, and its inevitability. I just think about all of our thoughts, memories and emotions just completely gone. I have also lost some people close to me, and the thought that their conciousness, personality, and entire being is just gone. I don't really know how better to explain it, but I am scared of not existing, as well as people I care about. When you know someone well, and they are not here anymore, it is like that half of the relationship just went into some kind of void. Their memories of you don't exist anymore. Hope that kind of made sense...

So? What difference would it make? Once I'm dead, I wouldn't have to worry about the constraints of being a human, I wouldn't have to worry about pain or trying to find pleasure, and I wouldn't have to deal with people that I don't like (which would be most). More than that, since I wouldn't have the ability to even conceive my state of being once I'm dead, it would all be inconsequential to being with, so this begs the question as to why it would even matter that I don't get another life in the first place.

That's actually something that I take solace in. I'd much rather not have immortality, spiritually or otherwise.

You sound like you don't enjoy life too much, why probably explains a lot. And just because you won't realize it once you are dead doesn't make it any better.

I never said I don't enjoy life. Don't go off and just assume that I'm miserable simply because I have a different perspective on how life works out in the end. I'm glad I get the opportunity to experience it, but that doesn't mean I want it to last forever. I'd rather have my fun, then let it end once it's all over, I don't want it to unnecessarily drag on. That would be another reason why I don't look forward to getting old. And how would the fact that it doesn't matter not make it any better once I'm dead?

I'm sorry, it's just the things that you said about not worrying about pain and stuff. I shouldn't have assumed things about you.
And no, I don't think the fact that it doesn't matter makes it any better. I agree that there's no point in whining about it, but death still sucks. At least, in my opinion.

But why does it suck? Why does the fact that life is completely inconsequential and irrelevant once such a scenario of death takes place not make things better? I've never understood why people think that it's such a scary or depressing thing to think about or to even accept, and I want to know why.

I did my best to explain, beyond that it's just a person by person thing I guess.

But that didn't explain why death would be an unfavorable outcome. You just said that you along with your friends and loved ones are gone, and your memories fade away and cease to exist. So? I don't get it. It's like saying "this stuff happens and because it happens it sucks," but you don't explain why it sucks that said stuff happens.
cease awareness, everything is fine, world continues to spin, but you have no place in it.
afterlife, continue to live on, preferable.
anyone who is a hardcore atheist or simply doesnt believe in some sort of higher mystery, well they usually come off as snobby obnoxious jerks. whats worse is how they complain about religious people trying to convert them while it destroys them that people believe in something other than nothing.
anyone who says you simply dont exist annoys me. have a little faith, logic simply cannot explain everything, mysteries are supposed to be in our lives, some cant always be answered with an atheist's precious logic.
yes, I believe in some form of life after death.
I may sound stupid but I can't stand people like that.

I beleive in something and some greater power but I dont follow any current religions.Lairdo91I'm kinda the same way, except I think nature itself is a greater power.

It's the idea that you will no longer be somebody. No more joy, laughter, just the absolute idea of one being nothing. It obviously won't effect us when we are in that state, but it will most definately effect people now. How can you not understand that is the question about 90 percent of the people in this world are asking. If you are asking that question in a truley inquisitive way than I appreciat the question. But if you are trying to make a point, than you deserve to rot in your grave. Sounds harsh, but religion is the touchiest subject in the world...I'm not christian, I am agnostic. I believe in a god...but If someone says that they don't, I don't care cause they have as high of a chance of being right than I do. So it doesn't matter to me, it just pisses me off when someone tries to push their belief on other people. I hate christian preachers that preach in public, I believe religion should not be spread...simply passed down by generation and all you can do is hope that it works out in the end.
If you say you don't care about death, you can damn sure expect people to peg you as "emo" and you can't be offended by it cause it's the way society works...to me, it's confusing how someone can actually accept utter loss of thought/emotions/and life.

I'm not trying to make a point, I'm trying to ask a question. I just don't see why people bother to care about the fact that they're going to die and what the possibilities of death could possibly entail if they have absolutely no basis whatsoever to even assume one outcome over the other. So what I don't get is why people bother to consider the possibilities of death and what sort of outcome could stem from one's life when they could just go on with their life instead, because death is afterall, inevitable. That's part of why I accept the possibility as much as any other possibility, because as far as I know, I am going to inevitably die.
And yes, I know I'm going to get pegged as "emo" or "depressed" or any other such bull**** that people try to label me in vain attempts to justify their own opinion as superior. I really don't care, because doing so only makes the other person look like a presumptuous and pretentious idiot.
this is a post i made on a topic kinda like this a few days ago..
if god is all powerful then what is the reason of his existance since he knows even his own end?
if hes perfect he does not desire because that would be the need of something and perfection cannot require anything else.
time is a stronger force than any deity since nothing could exist before time...
i think that everything is part of something bigger..there is no ultimate being, everything comes out of something else..
and on the topic...i believe when we die everything is over... we lose total conciousness of what was our subjective reality here on this phisical world..theres no spiritual place, humans grow and learn out of his living experiences, what they saw as normal in their families , school , society....sure you can say you feel something spiritual..but every religion says so and everyone claims to feel it..so every religion is true, rite? well i guess i will stick to calling it mental suggestion.
and about reincarnation...mmm so there are old souls rite??? and what about the millions of new ones created?whats the point of that?
the way i see it im thankfull of living this ride to the fullest and then go to rest in peace forever without any conciusness left. Please Log In to post.
