While Ligue 1 is certainly not Europe's premier league, it is pretty decent. And France is a great nation for soccer - sad to see most of France's national team playing abroad.

French teams never attracted many big name players to begin with. We usually have a few big name players here and there, but that's it. Even PSG did not have many big names before being bought by Qatar. At the moment, it only has a few star players known well outside of France (as opposed to top teams in the English, Spanish, and German league). Hell, if you look at OL, OM, Saint-Etienne, and Lille, there are barely any players known outside of France. Most star french players haven't played in France even before the tax hike, they usually play in other countries where they have a shot at winning the Champions League.
While the best players on the French national team play in other countries, lots of them do play in the country's league. Would be a shame to see them leave.

To be fair, half of the current squad of the french national team play abroad :P. Also, none of the best players (Ribery, Benzema, Lloris) play in the french national league. It's not only about keeping our own stars in the country, I think it's also about attracting foreign top players, which sadly we barely have. Look at PSG, they attracted a lot of great foreign players, and that's why they're winning.
