My daughter is only 5 months but her schooling is something I'm already thinking about.  My options are send her to the local public school in an 'ok' area, move to a nicer area with better schools, send her to expensive private school, or do this new online public school thing.

I'm thinking the online thing is a pretty cool option because it allows more time to do stuff that might actually help you in the future unlike school.  It's a pretty elaborate system involving teachers, books, and other materials similar to actually going to school so you can actually do just as well this way.  My only hesitation is that it may not be healthy to essentially home school a kid but then again it could turn out worse at a public school.

What do you think I should do and looking back would you have been happy if your parents gave you this online school option?  What would you do with your kid?

I should note that it looks as if the online option actually takes up less of the day...

No. You learn so many social skills in public school. Learning how to interact with people is really important.

Couldn't she interact in other things.  Maybe she will be involved in a sport or other hobbies....

No. Forced interaction and social involvement is good for her. Joining a sports team is voluntary, and they have to work together. It's mean- but her having to deal with kids who are ass hats/terrible human beings will make her a better person.

I did my high school online, and I maybe wouldn't do the same for my kids. Apart from the social experience aspect (which in some cases is probably better achieved elsewhere, because HS kids can be really screwed up sometimes) I learned some bad habits from it. Most semesters, I would leave multiple essays and projects until a week or 2 before the end of the semester just because I could, so I never gained a respect for deadlines, and that is now a huge detriment to me in college. Of course, I was also home schooled before HS, so that compounds the problem.

School isnt all about studying. It is more about socialization.

So I definately think people should go to school.

The flip side is though, you have to choose good schoools or else the kids can be a really bad influence.

I would say still go to school. I was homeschooled and i'm pretty socially awkward because of it.

I've taken a few online courses in college I never wish to do so again. Online courses make the misake of assuming that you can teach yourself just as well if not beter than a trained professional. It's so much easier to learn in a classroom envronment where the teacher is immedately available to answer questions, and help explain the material.

I did it.

It was awesome.  I could leave school any time I wanted to hang out with friends/go to parties.

Learning in school is in my opinion the best thing you can do. The social factor alone is important to proper child development.

The social aspect of school is extremely important, and because these online schools are so new, I don't think there is enough oversight and quality control. It's important to be able to communicate with teachers face to face.

Home-schooled students face similar issues, particularly with socialization. I've had some home-schooled students in my college courses and many were very introverted and didn't work well in group settings.

While these online school provide an option, you have to consider what is best for your child. Your child might not learn well in a purely online curriculum. Much of it is self-directed, and few students of that age can thrive in that situation.

Children need social interaction, online is not the way to go, especially at such tender ages.

Absolutely not. So much of what I learned about life I learned in school, having nothing to do with what they were trying to 'teach' me.

I took two semesters of online courses in college and it sucked ass. I failed two of them, one in each semester. It takes too much discipline and motivation.
