It currently has an average of just 34% over at rotten tomatos. It's average score out of 10 amongst critics is 5.1, and of 170 reviews 108 were bad.

The consensus:

"With storytelling as robotic as the film's iconic villains, Terminator Salvation offers plenty of great effects but lacks the heart of the original films."

Apparently it's very strong from an artistic standpoint but the plot, characters and storytelling are all very poor. It's a shame really, as this was my second biggest must-see movie of the year. I'll still go give it a chance, but my expectations have been considerably lowered. After Christian Bale said they were trying to give the franchise the Dark Knight treatment the last thing i was expecting was a drab story and poor characters.

Just from watching the trailers I could tell it's a cold empty action movie.
I'll watch it when it comes to the cheap theatres in a couple months.

Lets be honest here, the trailers were less than impressive, ever since they started coming out, and if you're comparing it to the Dark Knight in terms of story, TDK didnt have much of one at all. The only saving grace of TDK was Heath Ledger's Joker.

I thought it was good. It started of really slow to me, and it just didn't feel like a Terminator movie.

Well i can respect that as your opinion but i'd have to disagree. Compared to previous installments in the franchise, the Dark Knight had a fantastic story. I'd get maybe not liking the story, but saying there wasn't one makes no sense to me. Bruce trying to restore his relationship with Rachael unaware that she intends to marry Harvey Dent, the story of Harvey himself and his rise to prominence in the city and corruption at the hands of the joker, the city turning against Batman as the Joker claims he is responsible for his attacks, Batman's moral dilemma between protecting people and being the cause of danger, the big twist involving commissioner gordon. There's an awful lot of story there, especially for this kind of movie. So that's what i was kinda expecting with this when he specifically referenced the Dark Knight. Taking a somewhat tired, kinda tacky franchise and rebooting it with a more serious story and atmosphere.

Saving grace? The whole cast were good, the soundtrack was great at building up tension, the special effects were superb... YOUR only saving grace is being a mod... :x

I saw it, I thought it was pretty decent. Critics say you don't end up caring for anyone in the movie but I did end up caring for a lot of the characters (at least the main ones)

it was a good ACTION movie. nothing more nothing less.

A filmaficionado would never have a critic decide what is good and what is bad for them. They just would have to see it for themselves and decide on their own.

Critics suck..and terminator salvation kinda sucked as well...but it didnt suck as a action movie..it just sucked as a terminator movie.

It can't be worse than wolverine....

The critics have that at around the same score. Oh no, I was hoping Terminator was going to be brilliant.

I saw it on Friday and thought it was pretty good. It was certainly no T1 or T2 but it was a lot better than that T3 garbage. I don't know what the critics mean about no compelling characters because I thought Marcus Wright was a very compelling character. I hope they can bring him back for T5. Overall I give the movie 8/10. Better than Wolverine, but not better than Star Trek.

It goes without saying, but I'm sure everybody knows that without the word "Terminator" this movie would be a B-action flick that barely gets any box office receipts at all. This was the first movie in my entire life that I ever walked out of :) . I stayed the first hour and got to the part where
John Reese and the sidekick (who oh is a black might that induce racial criticism?) are stuck in the cage, and Marcus Flint rescues the very unattractive lady from a bunch of humans who seem to be evil in the midst of a war
and then I just up and left.

Granted, I had somewhere to be and I thought that I'll just maybe watch it at a friend's house three months from now, so no biggie. Makes you realize that Terminator 3 wasn't all that bad huh? And heck even X-men: the overrated Wolverine files was better (granted, I haven't seen Wolverine either, but I actually don't go to the theater in my country, for I'm very against their policy)

Sure, I could list all the problems with the movie, but there's no point since I just don't like these alleged "popcorn movies" or whatever, I actually want an "epic" film like Gladiator, or There Will Be Blood, or just movies that aren't silly because I've kind of outgrown them really.

I'll say this though, the characters are kind of attractive. The guy playing Reese is quite cute and the Marcus guy is also all burly and muscular and appealing. Wait, wasn't there a Marcus in that Gears of War game for the 360? Any similarities for those who have played the games? hmm...

Terminator Salvation was fairly enjoyable. Not the greatest popcorn flick of '09, but I liked it somewhat. Compared to Star Trek, I favored that over Salvation. Now, the countdown begins for Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen!

I thought it was pretty mediocre, the effects were good but the characters were mostly dull, the dialogue was awful, and the story was almost non existant at times. Even the action seemed souless and dull. I liked the character Marcus, but the rest of the film was what I expected from that hack of a director McG. Also those magnetic mines would work for walking terminators, but what about the ones that fly?

It was decent. The story didn't do much overall, but there were some cool moments. It was kind of a nice exploration into the Terminator future, but there just wasn't much in the movie. I mean
John Connor became leader of the Resistance, but we already knew that was going to happen. They saved Kyle Reese's life, but that was kind of a "duh" thing. Marcus "died", so they didn't add any significant characters to the franchise. The Resistance HQ got destroyed, but nobody cared. They blew up one SkyNet base, but the war goes on.
There just wasn't really much to the movie, there wasn't anything really unique about it. But the explosions and terminators were cool, and that's all I really went to the theatre to see, so I enjoyed it.

To me, it is just a action movie and barely touch the roots of the first two counterparts. The acting was alright but while in the middle of the movie I ask myself is this even a Terminator movie anymore? Hell, it didn't even have the Terminator theme song at any part of the movie unless I missed it. The only reference to the first 2 movies were the name of the characters and the main enemy being Skynet. Overall it is a decent action movie but it barely contribute to the Terminator franchise besides showing us things we've already knew.

wow you liked it better than T1? The thing that bugged me most about the movie is that no one was really dying except that one guy that tryed to run from the camp. In T1 the terminator would just punch right through someones stomache when he wanted to kill someone. In this new movie they just throw people around. lame. felt more like a kid's movie, but I guess thats what you get withj a pg-13 terminator movie :/

by todays standers T 1 AND t2 ARE PRETTY MUCH PG13 -__-

i mean take out the sex scene and afew other scenes and T1 was a pure pg13 movie
