All the tubes have ribs on the inside which enable the hamster to crawl up and down through them with relative ease.

I once fixed one of those tubes to my hamster's cage.

He got stuck and died. :(

Those tubes have ridges on them that they can grab onto. It's not at all abnormal for those cages to have vertical tubes.
