So I stayed up all night working on an essay only to wake up today and find that none of it was saved.

I started in the library, then e-mailed it to myself. I opened the link, typed all away and kept hitting "save", then when I went to close it, it didnt ask "Do you want to save before quitting?" So I just assumed it was because I had saved manually a second before.

Now I can't find the file, Im too pissed to do it over again, and I keep looking at the giant hole that I kicked into the wall a second ago. Has this ever happened to you, and if so, what did you do to relax and become passive again?

Nope, I've never had something that I saved just disappear. Actually, your story sounds rather impossible as you have told it. Computers aren't sentient beings, they don't do things unless we tell/allow them to.

I use the auto backup feature in word. It makes a copy of the file every so often.

Ah, I see. Using this forum to practice coming up with a plausible excuse to give to your teacher about why you didn't write your essay? Good thinking.

Thats why I keep think that file is still floating around somewhere in my computer and I just can't find it.. It has to be somewhere, word has an autosave feature.

Did word close cleanly when you shut the program down? If it doesn't the next time you open word sometimes it will offer you a version of the last doc you worked on as if word crashed on you.

This. But no, I've written many papers in the past and have never lost any of it. However, I do know of multiple people who failed college classes because of computer problems.

When I DL files with Firefox (Vista too) The go into my folder, then into AppData, then local, then Temp, and are saved in the temp folder. Not sure if that helps.

I googled MS Word Temporary FIles and found a lot of info. It depends on the version of world. You'll want to check that. Also if you sent it in an e-mail... it might be in your "sent items" folder if you have one.

Maybe this will help as well..... You could sen your self another file (not the paper you were working on) and open it a you did before. Go to save as and the folder in which the paper file should be in will open. If it is not there =(

Thanks for the advice, but what I meant when I said that I e-mailed to myself was this: I STARTED in the library, wrote about a paragraph (on a MAC computer, btw, dont know if it matters) then sent it to my PC laptop, opened it, and wrote the rest. The only thing ill find in my inbox is the first paragraph.

Grow up . Dont worry about the computer on your desk or lap . Take care of the computer on your shoulders. Have a good day.
