Shamolawn has to be one of the most hated directors on this site. But why? Because of a few clunkers?

Let's see:

Sixth Sense
Unbreakable
Signs
The Village

And even The Happening was somewhat decent. And The Last Airbender couldn't have been that bad if it made that much money.

M. Night Shyamalan is like a kamikaze pilot. He started out in a high place, but he continually went into sharp downwards angle until he crashed.

He has made some very good films, but I think he should stop writing and stick to directing. The Happening is a perfect example of this.

This. I never got why so many people are like "ZOMG ITS DIRECTED BY SO AND SO!" Really its the script writer and the actors that deserve the credit. Directors are needed and can add a lot, but they get too much credit.

When movies with the same director are all very successful even though the writers and cast are all different you put the only similar variable between all the movies and assume that is the reason.

Give each director the same script, and each movie will have its own distinct feel. A director gets exactly the amount of credit he or she deserves. They take a ton of creative liberty with a film.

Directors are giving too much credit.

It's funny how Shyamalan came out with a bang in Sixth Sense and was so highly regarded at one point. I barely remember those times. Now the mere mention of his name draws moans and snickering. But hey, he's awesome at putting together movie trailers just interesting enough to sucker people into theater.

The Last Airbender was highly expected and based on a popular franchise. So yes, it could be that bad even if it made so much money.

He was given great source material, and a large budget for the last airbender yet it still turned into a huge piece of *****.

That movie was simply God awful translation.

Scott Pilgrim had a similar set up as airbender (budget and source material), but had a better directer and that movie was ******** awesome.

The Village and The Happening we're garbage. Airbender I have not watched but have 0 interest in and just because it made money does not mean it was a good film. Alot of bad movies make money. Signs was decent I liked Mel Gibson in that. Unbreakable is my fav movie he has done. Sixth Sense was ok but I did not like it as much as others. I heard Lady in the Water is garbage but I never could sit through it to be sure.

Don't misunderstand, the movie is a truckload of WTF. But if you ever want to witness one actor's performance rescue a movie doomed to fail, it's definitely Lady In the Water.

Here's the deal with Shyamalan...

He had some really intuitive and original ideas before he got his first gig with Barry Mendel (AKA Hollywood and Spyglass productions).

I think The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs are all excellent achievements of his. This is rightly due because he started working on these ideas before the big production studios.

I think he has an excellent imagination and kudos to him for giving his all. I only wish that he had some more time to write inbetween putting his stories into script and directing them. I have a feeling that his first three were in the making quite a bit longer than the rest of his works.

I know he has it in him to make more good movies and write excellent plots. He just needs fresh sources of inspiration and more time to write.

Difference being that Airbender was based off of a monstrously popular cartoon series and was marketed towards a younger audience, whereas Scott Pilgrim is a nerd-oriented film based on a comic book.

It's hard to say. I don't think the problem is that he's underrated now, it's just that at one point he was so hyped up and hasn't been able to live up to his own standards. The Village doesn't really need to be on the list of his good movies. It was watchable up until the super lame twist.

If anything he is overrated. I'm sorry but Sixth Sense was not that good, and the twist in Signs basically ruined the movie. I didn't see unbreakable, but everything else he made is awful. The Last Airbender is pure and utter garbage.

No, he's not underrated. In fact, he's overrated because he got lucky with the 6th Sense, and everyone remembers him for that. Pretty much every single movie of his after that sucks beyond belief.

Didn't he also write all of these terrible movies. Its not a surprise when you know a twist is coming in every movie he writes. (I did like Unbreakable)
