Read all about it. Scientist have discovered a safer way to make iPS cells, which are seen as an ethical alternative to embryonic stem cells that can be just as effective or maybe even more effective.
This is great news.

Of course, nobody will do this, as we have had controversy-free alternatives to embryonic stem cells that have existed since before and after the controversy started, but nobody did a damn thing about those.
Embryonic stem cell research is obsolete, overhyped and should be abandoned for real research, or at the very least, replaced with an alternative like the TC posited. Hell, we can turn skin cells into embryonic-like stem cells, eliminating the controversy altogether, so why aren't we doing that?

I read about this in the paper today. Exciting, but still a long way to go before we get useable results. I still say America gets rid of the ridiculous restrictions on embryonic stem cells.
I'm even more excited about the possibility of using stem cells to create blood of whatever tyoe is accepted by all blood types. An infinite supply of transfusable blood is a joyful prospect indeed, and a lot closer than curing alzeihmer's, etc.
Or you know, we can just do stem cell research. It's great if it's more effective though.UssjTrunks
This is about stem cells, just not embryonic ones.

Because using reprogrammed skin cells has a very high chance of causing cancer, due to the retrovirus used to engineer the DNA. This new method should be safer, because it uses a virus in the common cold family, but is far from being usable.

What restrictions? Nobody's stopping private pharmaceutical companies from doing their thing with their own resources. The debate is whether or not federal funds should be used.

Well I think they damn well should be.

You think major corporations should receive government handouts? You think tax dollars should be given away to billion dollar companies?

Surely a lot of scientific research is funded by the public sector?

Sure there is. But wouldn't you agree that it'd be best to reserve public funds for research projects that have difficulty in finding private funding? If embryonic stem cell research is as promising as pharmaceutical industry lobbyists claim, wouldn't you think that very industry which they represent would already be pumping massive resources?

still that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to make it work.[QUOTE="Theokhoth"]No controversy? I would say no political value. The Democrats use push for Embryonic Stem Cell research so that the Republicans will have to stop it to assuage their Evangelical base and then the Dems can paint them as "uncompassionate" or a bunch of fundamentalists, but pushing alternatives has no political value because everyone would support it and there is no chance to one up the other party.Of course, nobody will do this, as we have had controversy-free alternatives to embryonic stem cells that have existed since before and after the controversy started, but nobody did a damn thing about those.
