Good news, we don't need these amateurs trying this kind of stuff.

A Swedish man has been arrested for illegally being in possession of radium, uranium and americium; in an attempt to split atoms in his kitchen. Reads first sentence of article....I can see the reason.

It sounds like he just had an honest interest in splitting some atoms.

seems like he didn't have any bad intentions with this, hopefully he doesn't get too harsh of a punishment. but if he does get 2 years, at least that isn't REALLY long.

I dont know about you, but I'd rather not handle uranium in my kitchen. Unless you want your hair falling out and your bone marrow rotting. :P

It doesn't seem like he meant anything wrong with it, but I don't think using the kitchen stove to handle radioactive material is exactly the safest way for a scientist to do.

Look at all those cigarettes... I think radiation poisoning + smoker = 99% chance of cancer, right?

Raw uranium really isn't that bad, it's only an issue when refined or when fission begins (the resulting isotopes are much more dangerous)

Yeah, this happens from time to time.

I personally prefer model trains and aeroplanes, but some people just resort to nuclear reactors when they get bored.

It releases radiation, which will obviously not stored properly in his kitchen. This is very dangerous, he should face fines.

Uranium can be very dangerous, obviously armatures shouldn't own it.

"It turns out he took some time to contact the authorities about his experiments, just to find out if his actions were legal or not. They were quick to respond by sending the police to arrest him and seize all possessions and materials related to his activities."

No common sense.

I'm almost positive exposing your neighbors to radiation violates some sort of law. As well as owning illegal substances. Which aren't made commonly available for a reason..

It didn't say how much of it he had or what grade it was. You can buy low grade isotopes online perfectly legally. Considering the picture it wouldn't have been enough to do any actual harm.

Maybe the carcinogenic effects of one kinda cancel out the carcinogenic effects of the other.

He had good intentions, but I wouldn't want my neighbor to ask me one day, 'Hey, do you want to watch my Nuclear Reactor?'. I think he should be released and given an opportunity to work with true experts in this field. Also, how the **** did he get radioactive materials?

What the hell? The guy was just genuinely interested and wanted to try it out. No need for him to be arrested/given a prison sentence. This is why I hate society.

lols, because playing with those basic fabrics have no ramifications whatsoever. Yeah, let the man work. In fact, we should ship out little science kits with uranium and such for the younger visionaries.
