WICHITA, Kan. - Police say a man is in custody after he brought a small improvised explosive device into a women's health care clinic that provides abortions in south-central Kansas.

Wichita Police Department spokesman Doug Nolte says officers responded to the South Wind Women's Center around 3:30 p.m. Monday. He says on-site security inspected a backpack the man brought in and found knives and the explosive device.

Officials told CBS affiliate KWCH in Wichita that the suspect was also carrying a small box wrapped in tape.

Clinic staff evacuated the building, and a bomb squad was called to remove the backpack. No injuries were reported.

Nolte says police are investigating whether the man intended to harm the clinic. The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are also investigating.

The clinic is one of three in Kansas that provide abortions. It opened in 2013 in the same building where Dr. George Tiller provided abortions before he was gunned down in 2009. Tiller's killer, Scott Roeder, said that he had chosen to obey "God's law" to save babies, after shooting Tiller while the doctor was serving as an usher in church.

In a statement, the clinic said: "Today, our staff and local law enforcement handled a threat to the safety of our patients and staff promptly and effectively. The systems that we have in place to protect our patients and staff worked."

Source

I'm in an awe of the timid and scrupulous language of the article - no mentions of the man's religion, skin color or the word terrorist at all.

The irony of trying to blow people up for what they deem as "murdering" an unborn fetus is staggering. If that was his intention and thought process of course.

Those anti-abortion terrorists are still at it even now, huh?

Hmm...I wonder. lol

Irony is being willing to take lives in defense of "pro-life".

Also, only 3 abortion clinics in the entire state of Kansas? Really? Seems far and few.

Americans need to move on from abortion. Everytime it's brought up in political discourse I feel like we've gone back in time.

Time to let it go, Elsa

@ianhh6: Most abortion clinics are in minority neighborhoods. Kanas is mainly wheat fields with only a few major cities.

Well, I say you're a terrorist hugger. What do you think of that?

I guess his thought process was that punishment ought to fit the crime; a murderer deserves murdering. That line of thought is sound; his perversion of it, however, isn't.

Yea that was the highlight of the article for me. The language is so timid and the handling of the matter is so painstaking that the result is a perverse debacle. It hasn't occurred to me until recently that something like terrorism can afford such partisanship.

At any rate that's not the point; this is more about how this is getting virtually no coverage. The few outlets that covered it are tiptoeing around a clear-cut case of terrorism and the authorities are practicing coverup-tier discretion.

The nutbag conservatives are using legal trickery to shut them all down anyway. What's the point of blowing them up? Its not like they won't be required to posess a liquor license or have a certified dog groomer on the premises or be shut down in the next few weeks.

God says "Thou shalt not kill". There is no mincing of words; no "unless..." in that commandment.

We don't stone people to death in the civilized world, nor perform "honor" killings, and vigilante justice has no place in modern society.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/police-explosive-device-found-wichita-womens-clinic-33149187

A homeless man who showed up for a job interview at a Wichita abortion clinic with a small bottle of gunpowder and a wick in his backpack didn't mean any harm, police said Tuesday.

The 19-year-old man had everything he owned in the backpack when he arrived for his interview Monday at the South Wind Women's Center, Wichita police spokesman Lt. James Espinoza said. Although the device could have blown off someone's fingers had it exploded in their hand, it was too small to damage the clinic, he added.

Oops ... not a Christian Fundamentalist ... turns out it's a homeless dude who owned a bit of gunpowder. Showed up for a job interview with everything he owned.

Oh, so it wasn't a planned attack, it was just some foolishness from some guy who wanted to join the abortion clinics team?

It's actually been a while since there has been a bombing or arson at an abortion facility, to my knowledge. There was some incident last year where a pro-choice extremist tried to toss a molotov cocktail at pro-lifers praying outside of an abortion facility. And of course there were those shenanigans back in 2013 when pro-choicers were mad at Texas' new law and people were throwing jars of urine at Texas legislators.

lmao right

The France train dude claimed he was a homeless man who just wanted to rob the train and not hurt anyone and wasn't a terrorist. Do people believe him? Of course not. Funny how they are quick to believe the abortion clinic guy's story without a second thought. Another classic case of American domestic terrorism being swept under the rug.

I can't believe I almost missed that gem. I literally burst into laughter. I don't know which is more pathetic: the fact that this is the best coverup authorities could come up with or the fact that many are ready to buy it; American authorities must have a really low opinion of their citizenry.

I'm probably going to trust the police who investigated it, as well as the facilities attorneys who are satisfied with the the results of said investigation.

Honestly, if you've ever dealt with homeless people, a bottle of gunpowder really isn't that strange. They carry everything with them and will collect anything of value.

Well sure, where you live is always a factor. You've either matured into your own or let the mask slide off through the years, and based on where you live, can't really hold that against you. And it wasn't about turning it into russian propaganda at all. It was about saying that you're off the wire, either by choice or fantasy. I mean that guy, it's clear from the one of two off the norm posts of his that he does this entirely with a shit eating grin. But not you. So maybe the comparison was wrong.

The guy could very well be a terrorist. Shit, I don't know either way! I just said it didn't seem so clear cut. Hell when that thing happen on the train in France I figured it just some asshole since here in the states we actually have that happen quite a bit. But yeah, could of easily just called it out i guess. Muslim, in just about every region but the United States, it's usually a muslim.

Shit dude, there is more debate over whose country beat/hurt/trolled that muslim more, than any surprise that it WAS muslim. So don't worry about me being very bright or not in your opinion, I'm doing just fine here in Ohio. I'm going to go out and smoke while wondering what my caucasian heterosexual state of being is going to run into tomorrow. I hope more call this guy out for the terrorist that he obviously is so that you can have a brighter life tomorrow, too.

An act of terrorism is an act of terrorism. I wonder if he'll be sent to Guantanamo or given access to a lawyer. It's a wonder what being born in the right country can do for your "rights."

Instead of conceding to the unequivocal and self-evident fact that a man who brings a bomb and knives to a place that signifies ideological strife is - by the adopted definition of terrorism - a terrorist, you chose to make this about Russian propaganda and my place of residence. You're not very bright (or honest) are you.

@sonicare Here's a specimen of this guy's apologists; we were not disappointed.

Going past your mostly nonsensical post, and admitting of the perverse relevancy of my place of residence to this topic, explain to me how this incident isn't a clear-cut case of domestic terrorism.

Well... I guess the same reasons those kids getting bombed on the beach wasn't, right? Cause we really really REALLY want to do a black and white cut and paste across the board. It isn't a clear cut case either for or against. He could have, might not have. I don't live where this took place and have no way to personally verify if he was really homeless or not. I have known people who were homeless and seen just how much crap they might load around, and can understand the notion of it being intended as personal entertainment in the form of a firecracker.

He might not of intended to do anything at the clinic, but maybe he was going to hurt someone/somewhere else? Makes it domestic terrorism for sure! But not seeing that case being made here. Find something that shows otherwise, and then there is something to discuss.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/police-explosive-device-found-wichita-womens-clinic-33149187

I'm probably going to trust the police who investigated it, as well as the facilities attorneys who are satisfied with the the results of said investigation.

Honestly, if you've ever dealt with homeless people, a bottle of gunpowder really isn't that strange. They carry everything with them and will collect anything of value.

That makes sense. I was surprised that it turned out that this guy most likely wasn't planning on any bombings, but if the police accept that he just had a little bit in his pack, I'll accept it too. And then to a certain extent this thread is moot.

Besides, for all the talk pro-choice groups and the media give about abortion clinics being bombed, I don't remember hearing of any such bombings on the news during my life time. I'm guessing that might have bee more common in the 1980s, but it probably wasn't very frequent even then.
