I agree that he is a brilliant song writer but he is also an amazing singer. His voice is unlike anyone elses and it adds alot to his songs that others cannot.

Knocking on heaven's door is one of my all time favourite non-trance/dance songs.

His voice is unique, but it's not melodious if you get what I'm saying. The tune is there, but that kind of voice is kinda like for hard rock lol.

Eh, I guess you have to get used to his voice. I personally think his voice is just fine for his music, and his songs would sound weird sung by just about anyone else.

I heard a great cover of his song Death is not the end by Nick Cave. I actually thought it sounded better than the original Bob Dylan version.

Bob Dylan is kind of overrated. He's kind of an icon or posterchild of sorts.

He may not have the best voice, but if you watch some live videos from his younger days, his delivery is pretty amazing.

I dunno. I mean, Dylan has just as outlandish a voice as Tom Waits, and I like both of their voices. They can be melodious, I just find Dylan's delivery to be a bit pronounced. He's more of a writer than a singer and it shows, but he doesn't have a bad voice.

I heard him sing once in an awards show a few years back and the looks at the audience just said it all---WTF? You could hardly tell what he was saying and the words were mumbled. I agree he's a great song writer, but his voice hasn't aged well.

Like a Rolling Stone is one of the best songs ever released. Nobody is going to confuse his voice with phil collins or someone like that, but they shouldn't. His music has always been edgy, with a grainy sound. Plus, don't even bring up anything over the lastfew decades cause he was in a motorcycleaccident that really messed him up physically. You listen to his old stuff, his voice is perfect for the melodies and songs he makes

Yeah, I like the cover of "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" performed by Them (ft Van Morrison) more than the original by Bob Dylan.

That's what seems to happen a lot. Most people prefer the cover version rather than Dylan's original, the most famous (I think) being the All Along the Watchtower cover by Hendrix :P

Cat Stevens is better.

*flame shield up

Cat Stevens has far deeper, more philosophical lyrics, is a better singer, can play more instruments, and has overcame far more hardship in his life. Who cares if he's a Muslim, he's still the best folk rock artist the galaxy has ever known.

I can't remember which bob dylan documentary it is (it's the one w/ Donavan I think), but it shows him getting interviewed by some guy who asks something about his voice. Bob replies "what's wrong w/ my voice?" and the guy says it's bad, and bob basically tears him a new one and shows the guy really doesn't know anything about signing or music for that matter.

I'll admit his voice is a bit nassally but over time I've come to like his versions better than all the covers.

I totally agree with you, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. He's a dreadful singer and I can't stand listening to his songs. However, he's a good songwriter and I almost always LOVE his songs when other artists cover them.

Cat Stevens is english, TC said Dylan is the best songwriter in american history so that makes it hard to compare

Also he converted to islam after he had wrote a lot of his songs so that is an irrevenant point

and then there's his magnum opus, 'Tea for the Tillerman!' I always cry when I hear 'Into White.' I honestly don't know why. Pretty much every song on Tillerman is a musical masterpiece, there's no doubt about it. No doubt about it.

I only heard some of his stuff recently, I love his song Mr Tambourine Man. I know what you mean by he's not the best singer but it's got something to it.

This reminds me of the old Kurt Cobain debate about his singing.

And as a serious singer, I find this to be utter cowpoo. Why is technical proficiency so unattainable? The entire point of becoming a singer is being able to belt like a frickin' beast. I'm one of those people who believes everyone has a great voice within them. It just takes some coaxing to come out. Just because you have the creativity doesn't mean you should get a free pass when it comes to actual proficiency. You could have stuck with just being a songwriter, but once you actually decide to come out and sing your own creations, I'm going to judge you by the highest and fairest musical standard.

It is this fact, moreso than overall mediocrity of songs, that contributes to my distaste for modern, mainstream music.
