How do you stop the Apocalypse? File a lawsuit!
Perhaps you have heard of the Large Hadron Collider? It's a gigantic (17 mile circumference!) particle accelerator being constructed on the France-Switzerland border that'll be used to conduct experiments in particle physics. Micro black holes, strangelets, Higgs boson... this stuff is cool! This is the biggest (pun intended) thing to hit research science since the Hubble Space Telescope. Anyone with even the smallest interest in Physics should be excited.
Well, it seems some people have been watching too much sci-fi and are latching onto the creation of micro black holes as a danger to the world. "The compression of the two atoms colliding together at nearly light speed will cause an irreversible implosion, forming a miniature version of a giant black hole. Any matter coming into contact with it would fall into it and never be able to escape. Eventually, all of earth would fall into such growing micro-black-hole, converting earth into a medium-sized black hole." says the plaintiffs. They also fear that uncontrolled strangelets may instigate an unstoppable chain reaction turning all matter on earth into a single large particle.
Now, what do you do in America if someone is doing something you don't like? The answer, of course, is file a lawsuit! That's right, a man in Hawaii is sueing the U.S. Department of Energy, Fermilab, and CERN to stop all activities at the Large Hadron Collider.
Here's a link to the lawsuit itself.
