How do you stop the Apocalypse? File a lawsuit!

Perhaps you have heard of the Large Hadron Collider? It's a gigantic (17 mile circumference!) particle accelerator being constructed on the France-Switzerland border that'll be used to conduct experiments in particle physics. Micro black holes, strangelets, Higgs boson... this stuff is cool! This is the biggest (pun intended) thing to hit research science since the Hubble Space Telescope. Anyone with even the smallest interest in Physics should be excited.

Well, it seems some people have been watching too much sci-fi and are latching onto the creation of micro black holes as a danger to the world. "The compression of the two atoms colliding together at nearly light speed will cause an irreversible implosion, forming a miniature version of a giant black hole. Any matter coming into contact with it would fall into it and never be able to escape. Eventually, all of earth would fall into such growing micro-black-hole, converting earth into a medium-sized black hole." says the plaintiffs. They also fear that uncontrolled strangelets may instigate an unstoppable chain reaction turning all matter on earth into a single large particle.

Now, what do you do in America if someone is doing something you don't like? The answer, of course, is file a lawsuit! That's right, a man in Hawaii is sueing the U.S. Department of Energy, Fermilab, and CERN to stop all activities at the Large Hadron Collider.

Here's a link to the lawsuit itself.

Ha, that's awesome. But I get the idea, it's some pretty crazy stuff they're going to attempt.

Wow, that is some crazy stuff.

But anyway, I'd only be REALLY concerned if scientists started doing heavy research with anti-matter...

There is no question that should defendants inadvertently create a dangerous form of matter such as a micro black hole or a strangelet, or otherwise create unsafe conditions of physics, then the environmental impact would be both local and national in scope, and quite deadly to everyone.Line 26 of the Lawsuit

Well there was an extremely small chance the black hole could somehow become uncontrolable and destroy the earth. I think its a bad idea, why cant they just do this thing on the moon or something in the future and not put 7 billion lives at stake..

At least he has follow through to get rid of things he doesn't like..... Sadly, though, this seems like a perfect example of why the American Justice System is going down the crapper.

What the F...Micro black holes? Stranglets? Higgs boson? 17 mile circumference? By micro do they mean in realitve size to say a normal black hole in space? Or micro as in say the size of a basketball, because I dont want any 17 mile radius Blackholes...That's crazy.

I must ask, though: If you're about to experiment with something whos results *may* be unpredictable, why should we feel 100% safe and secure?

Just wondering what their saftey measures are in the event that all doesn't go as expected when their sped-up particles slap each other at near light speeds? And is it possible to have a saftey measure for something unanticipated?

Just wondering.

IIRC, the size of the back holes are so small that it wouldn't be able to do much. Personally, I'm very interested in possible advances in science, even though I probably can't comprehend what these people are even saying.

You cant get too close. This thing isn't just suspended in the air somewhere. It's in an enclosed, controlled space.

I actually support this guy. I mean, i know that the chances of what he is claiming are tiny, but Im the kind of guy that would rather be safe than sorry. Could the benefits of conducting such experiments justify putting our home at risk? I dont think so. I we think we should wait untill we can conduct such experiments in outer space.... away from earth.

While the lawsuit is rediculous, it does raise some serious questions. The people at CERN are going to be screwing around with theoretical physics, and if I've learned anything from video games (and there's a good chance I haven't) it's that screwing around with physics usually leads to the creation of a portal to another world, dimension, or hell.

Yeah, probably. Its like playing one of the SimCity games. At first you have fun, you keep building stuff, its all good when stuff is going well. But when everything inevitably starts turning to crap, the only way you can have fun anymore is to play around with the disaster buttons.

I really think people are overreacting. These are experts in their field, they're not just gonna mess around with stuff they don't understand like you see in movies. There have been scientific studies in this exact topic over the danger of the micro black holes, and they have concluded there is no significant risk, and that stuff similar to this already happens naturally with no major consequence.
