"One man probably has learned a costly lesson about where he hides his cash.

The unidentified father from Sydney, Australia, sold his car last weekend. The $15,000 (approximately $15,652 in U.S. dollars) in proceeds was earmarked for his mortgage payment and other bills, according to Australian media. Opting not to squirrel away the loot in a mattress or bury it in his backyard, he decided to hide it his oven, which rarely gets used.

Bad move: Turns out, his wife decided to use the oven that day, preheating it for chicken nuggets for their two children and, yes, cooked the cash."

Who fault it is?

This guy's never heard of a bank, or at the very least, a safe?

If you're that dopey to hide your money in a place where there's a possibility for it to CATCH FIRE, maybe you're better off without it.

I never inspect my oven before preheating. At best, I'll give a quick peek to make sure the rack is at the right level.

I don't know how it is in that strange country, but here in the U.S. if you have damaged money, you can have it replaced for face value as long as 51% of the bill remains (doesn't matter if it's burnt, it just has to be there).

There's actually a whole branch of the Treasury Department devoted to this due to house fires and such.

I do

i do as well.

depending on what im cooking depends on if i need to remove our pizza stone or not. some times we just need a thin baking sheet. then on the opposite end, if i need to use the pizza stone(which we use for most everything, thing is awesome), i need to make sure its in the oven while it preheats.

You should always check the oven before turning it on. Children love to play in them.

Generally speaking pans and baking sheets aren't at risk of catching fire when exposed to oven heat.

True, but I did melt the handle of a frying pan once.

I'm not saying keeping cash in there is a good idea or anything :P

$15,000... I'd be ready to climb a clock tower.

But seriously, he could've just as easily thrown it all in a bag and stored it up in the roof of the house. That would've done the trick.

Australian notes are made differently to American notes. Australian notes consist of a plastic polymer of sorts.

By the time they realised the cash was in the oven, I'm sure they would have just melted a little and not have completely caught fire.

On that note bills that aren't seriously damaged but have more than half remaining can simply be exchanged at a bank. For bills that are seriously damaged (burned, shredded, etc) can be exchanged by the Tresury where they have inspectors examine the bills and determine if they're exchangable or not, the value of them, etc. I'm not sure if the Treasury, in these cases, has any specific rule about how much of the bill has to remain.

With something as smple and uniform in shape and size as a dollar note (and with how many bank employees handle) it's really not difficult to tell if more than half is there or not.

Because storing money in your oven is not a reasonable thing to do, so she probably never expected her husband to do it.
