I prefer Leon the Professional, i didnt feel a connection as strong between denzels character and dakotas compared to Jean Renos character and natalie portmans in the profiessional. Plus Gary Oldman is in The Professional and nobody in man on fire is as awesome as Gary Oldman. just look at this scene for example.

Such a great scene.

I honestly didn't care for Man on Fire. It was very stylized, but the rest of the film just wasn't there for me.

The style in man on fire was a bit over the top sometimes, I kinda felt the director used the style too much to cover up that not much was going on in the scene. I guess thats tony scott for you.

Only seen Man on Fire so really can't judge. Although, if these two movies are alike (I enjoyed Man on Fire), I may consider the other.

Depends, Leon is more "fun" to watch though so I would rather watch it at anytime, but overall I like Man of fire better as a "movie"(art style, acting, production value).

In the end............its tough but Leon the professional wins because I haven't seen it as many times as man onf fire and its a bit more upbeat even when it ends.

One is a competent thriller with solid characterization and a great antagonist that satisfied me but didn't wow me.

One is a hack-job by a hack director with an overhyped star and not one shred of humanity.

By the way, that first one is Leon.

These two movies don't really have much in common, but Leon wins with no competition.

To be fair I haven't seen Man on Fire, but Leon has Gary Oldman in one of his very best roles. . . that's hard to beat.

If you're comparing the two characters, though, I can't honestly say since I only have an opinion on one of them. I guess I should check out Man on Fire then, eh?

The Professional. By far.

Thats not to say Man On Fire is bad; it was an excellent and cool movie

But The Professional had class, and it had a better bad guy. It also had a better story imo; both centered around a little girl and her savior, but I thought The Professional did it better.

This is a good thread, btw; the more I think about it, the more I see how much the two movies had in common. Revenge, the bonding between a man-girl relationship in a fatherly way, a man protecting her at all costs, sacrifice...all great.

I thought Natalie Portman was great in the professional, much better than dakote fanning. Also did you read the original script or see the uncut version of the professional? Lots more odd vaguely sexual scenes it there, and in the original script they actually do have sex.

I dunno if he did smoking aces, but speaking of that I think i am one of the few people who actually enjoyed that movie.

ya i remember watching it on TV once, and then a while later watching it on my DVD and they cut out so much of the near-pedophile crap its not even funny.

Like Jean was resisting and everything, but Natalie kept urging him. Really odd but great relationship. Btw Natalie's best acting was in that movie, imo.

I never thought he was a pedophile, she was just too mature for her age and never had a good father figure. Its was a very odd relationship, they were both fantastic in their roles though. After seeing Leon I watched the star wars prequels and the whole time I kept thinking "Is this the same actress as the great one in the professional?" Shame she hasnt done a role as well as the professionals one.

Man on fire is a remake. Scott Glenn plays Denzel's character. I think its better than the remake, although quite different. But neither are better than Leon. No contest. Gary Oldman's character is one of the best villains in the history of film.

I don't know if these films are comparable upon closer examination of the films underlying points, but they do bear a loose resemblance to one another. In any case, Leon The Professional is a better film in my opinion. Better actors, better story, just overall a more satisfying and complete movie.

Only a scrub dies to Oven Man, even on Professional.

I've only seen Man On Fire and it was alright. I don't think it was one of Denzel's best. I have to see The Professional if it's as good as you guys make it out to be.
