And I'm not talking mainstream (Naruto, Bleach, Death Note, One Piece... etc). I'm talking about the kind that's pretty much niche to "not so well known" outside of Japan. I'm a huge fan of Mitsuru Adachi's series especially, have read 90% of his scanlations on the net (latest being Cross Game). Now I wish Q&A would continue. Slam Dunk is also hilarious, GTO is legendary, Liar Game is full of twists and interesting ideas (though the art style could be better), Hajime no Ippo is funny and thrilling, Devilman is without a doubt Nagai's greatest work. I've also read a few of Tezuka's works (MW, Ode to Kirihito, Apollo's Song). Another notable mention for me is Naoki Urusawa (Monster, 20th Century Boys, Billy Bat), simply genius writing and pacing. That's what comes to mind at the moment.

P.S. I prefer Manga over Anime.

Never been into anime. The only one I read was In Odd We Trust, which was like a prequel to Dean Koont'z Odd Thomas.

To be honest, me too! But seeing as it's Jump and getting an Anime this Fall I'd rather not mention it. I have a feeling it'll end around October/November. Full Metal Alchemist's ending (Manga) was kinda lackluster too, there should be a follow-up.

I am also liking manga over anime recently. Currently, I am reading "Good Ending", "Tasogare Otome x Amnesia", "Narue no Sekai","Mysterious Girlfriend X", "The World God Only Knows", and the typical shounen stuff (Naruto, kimi no iru machi, bleach, etc)... I would also recommend I"s, Suzuka, Ichigo 100%, Hatsukoi Limited, and Ane Doki... I am a sucker for romance stuff...

I've read all those mentioned. And yeah, that's why I like Adachi's stuff, it's full of romantic plots that would put a TV Drama to shame IMO.

How was the FMA ending lackluster? I thought it was perfect. It was much better than the original anime ending at least.

I dunno it was too "happy ending"~ish for me. I hate it when writers cave in to what the fans would expect from an ending and just wrap it up just the way they'd like it (MGS4 comes to mind). There should've been more twists because the ending became obvious by the time they started battling you know who.

I was thinking the same. I started Kurohime a ways back. I got to chapter 33 but stopped...it is very good. I should pick it back up. I havent heard of Gamble Fish, TIJI-KUN!, TOKYO INNOCENT, Sundome, Nana to Kaoru, Countrouble....I like Fairy Tale but I get the feeling there isnt really a plot.

Gamble Fish and Tiji-kun aren't romance. I needed a change of plot. Sundome and Nana to Kaoru are ecchi. Tokyo Innocent and Countrouble scanlatations are slow....like so slow. I stopped reading Kurohime too, just picked back up a few months ago. Fairy Tale is like Kenshin, it's a plot as all as there's action.

I saw it years ago and I can't remember enough to really judge. But I recall by then I was shifting more to Manga and didn't see the movie as something worthy of a follow-up. Felt like a cash-in.

The anime had its own plotAfter_Math

They have the same plot until you know who gets the axe. After that the plots seperated due to the fact that the Anime caught up with the Manga. The Manga's plot is overall better but the Anime's ending is better IMO. Forget the movie, I only saw it because I was curious.

Yea I know lol, I read both. I thought you may have enjoyed the movie, because the ending wasn't quite a happy ending. The anime felt rushed compared to the manga, but the movie was fairly decent. I was surpraised by Alphonse in the movie, he was a very powerful alchemist.

I would seriously check out "Good Ending" if you havent though. Its really well crafted. I discovered it a couple days ago. I wondered how itd last past a couple issue with the pace that the author set, but it keeps going and always makes sense.

Well actually I didn't start this thread to get recommendations, I'm just a fan who wanted to start a Manga discussion focused on non-mainstream stuff. I'm pretty knowledgable outside of the field's mainstream somewhat so if you want just take the series I mentioned in the OP and give them a go. I myself don't need any recommendations.

I read a lot of manga, I am currently reading Bleach, Cage of Eden, D.Gray-man, Fairy Tail, Franken Fran, Futari Ecchi, GANTZ, Kimi no Iru Machi, Mahou Sensei Negima, Nana to Kaoru, Naruto, One Piece, and Oretama (aka My Balls. I really gotta track down that last chapter. -_-) I've finished 37 manga (that I've recorded, there's more that I haven't recorded), including Shaman King, GTO, I''s, Ichigo 100%, Suzuka, to-LOVE-ru, Beck (amazing manga), and School Days. My anime list is bigger though. :P

That's what comes to mind at the moment.

P.S. I prefer Manga over Anime.

I'm pretty sure quite a bit of manga fans know about GTO. Regardless, its definitely a great series. One of my absolute favorites. I also love the Kare Kano manga.

Yeah I guess, for me Adachi's series convinced me how it's best to start from Manga. I'd always feel like watching the Anime adaptatons after finishing a series of his, but aside from Touch I haven't gone beyond Manga with his creations. Too bad it's rare to find his Anime adaptations sub'd on the net and Western distributers turn a blind eye to his genius.
