A submarine cruises underwater at 10k/h and on the surface of the water at 16km/h. The sumbarmine traels a distance of 160km in 12.5h. how long did it travel under water? how long did it travel on the surfeace.

It seems that you are missing information. How do we know what percentage of time the sub spent on the surface and under water? We can only guess.

Okay don't take my word on this cause I suck at algebra.

What I think you do is set up an equation.

x=time travelled underwater

(12.5-x) = time traveled above water (both of these are interchangable, you could use either one to represent one of the times, it doesn't matter)

so now set up an equation

10x + 16(12.5-x) = 160

10x + 200 -16x = 160

40 = 6x

x = 40/6

Now plug it back into the times. (x and 12.5-x)

40/6 = 6 2/3 hr travelled under water = 6 hr 40 min

12.5-40/6 = 5.83333 hr travelled above water = 5 hr 50 min

Ta da!

~-~Hm, I may know how to make a program do this for me. Assuming this problem consists of trying things until one works. You know the math formula you need to follow? (I'm too lazy to do any of it)~-~ ~-~Edit: Never mind, ^^^ he looks like he got it pretty good.~-~

It's not a guess an check problem, it's just a system of equations/substitution problem

~-~Aw.:( *walks away disappointed*~-~ ~-~Added: Anyone want to know all the prime numbers from x to y? (you get to pick x and y. Just leave it below... oh... about 30,000,000.)~-~ ~-~Edit again: ARGH! It's with time anyways. I don't know how to do time in C++.:( (I can make it go by 8s and 16s bu not 6s. I don't really know how those will help you but whatever.)~-~

I went and checked my answer, I'm positive it's right (my process, I always could've made an arithmetic error). That's how you do it.

I solved the exact same problem with a dude that jogged and walked to school everyday, I see a lot of familiar faces from that thread...
