it's all because they made a PG-13 money grabbing filmWizz46
I don't think the rating has anything to do with it. The Dark Knight is rated PG-13.

Batman movies were always rated PG-13 however, Max Payne the game was R rated. when you change the rating like that it changes the story significantly

I think you're missing my point: The Dark Knight is an awesome film and its rated PG-13.
Just because you don't show a large amount of violence in a film doesn't change its story at all.
Also, the film is rated MA15+ here in Australia, thats pretty high given our ratings are G, PG, M, MA, R18+.

I'm not saying that all PG-13 movies suck. I'm saying that the entire point of the Max Payne story line is to be as dark and violent as possible, when they lowered the rating they had to downgrade those crucial storyline components.

Depends what the source material is. Batman comics (The latest ones, not the detective ones) are more of a psychological thriller than action. Especially Frank Miller's Dark Knight comics. This lends to the possibility of making a PG-13 movie because violence isnt the main point of the source material. The main theme is the psyche of our hero. On the other hand max payne is a story about vengeance. Its like a film noir version of The Punisher. Now if you cant have excessive violence and lots of artistic blood and gore...well, you are sorta missing one of the major factors of the movie. Sure Max Payne deals with Max's broken psyche too, but to a far lesser extent than Batman. And in the game, the violence works to show Max's anger and the result of the death of his family. Max Payne is a movie/game that thrives on violence, and as thus, it needs its R rating.

Silent Hill was good imo.
Silent Hill had me until about the last 30 minutes...much like I Am Legend
Every movie based on games, its sucks. I dont know why they do that.SrTVBR
heres to me hoping God of War movie breaks the trend :?
Oh, Marky Mark, how you've fallen.
He went from being a relatively uninteresting and inoffensive actor to his overacting blowout in The Departed, followed by the brilliant decision to be in the thriller classic The Happening, and now he's in Max Payne after refusing to play the games to get a sense of the character.
I'll probably rent it when it hits DVD. Looks like it's aping Sin City to the same extent that Hitman ripped off Bourne.

Yeah I liked him when he was more understated in his roles. It was fun to watch that way, now it is just frantic "acting" by him :(

the movie would have sucked regardless. OOOHHH more violence, that would make it better. If it was anything like the game it would be two hours of walking through run down homes, slo mo jumping through doorways while you shoot two pistols at gangsters wielding shotguns.

People, people, what are you talking about? The movie isn't out yet. The release date is October 17th.
And btw, the game was rated R because of all the violence and the blood in the gameplay, this had nothing to do with the story. You can still keep thet dark story, just trim down on all the blood splatter. So no biggie. Thos movie (dispite being a vodeogame-to-movie thing) has what it takes to make it. My only problem with it is Wahlberg, since all his movies tend to fail miserably.
PS - and those who think that BB was just a not important bump in Max's way clearly missed a major plot point. Just because the encounter with him was brief, doesn't mean he didn't matter to the whole story.

Don't worry, it is. I'd rather poke my eyes out than watch that movie again.

Not like they were going to make it exactly like the game. Max Payne had (and still has) potential as a movie, because it actually has a solid story line. Pity game-to-movie makers just go for the easy cash in.I was hoping this would be a decent film, but game based films never are
Big_Bad_Sad
Agreed. Except for The Doo....Oh nevermind......
For a start I don't think those reviews made it sound poor, too much snow/rain? And too much action. That's gamers right there...
I read some of the script, sounds alright to me. They'd have to fail majori on the delivery of lines and the direction to fluff it up. I'm going to see it.
Hmm...
I may see it anyway. Looks decent. But they did change the story quite a bit and I like the story of the game quite a bit. Do not expect much from it at all to be honest.

Yeah. The reviews did not make it out to seem that bad.
Mark Walberg has been failing bad as of late..
I already knew this movie was gonna suck when I read about the Director complaining on his movie getting rated R instead of PG13..
He refused to play the games? That's pretty stupid...Oh, Marky Mark, how you've fallen.

I might be the only one in the minority here, but I'm just not excited about this film. Never mind the fact that it has a PG-13 rating...I think the reason I'm different about this is the source material, and the director. Why wait over seven years to make this into a film? If it was produced around the same timeframe when I was still playing the game, I'd be more interested. As far as the director goes, the movies I seen of his weren't memorable (Behind Enemy Lines) or original (The Omen remake) . As it stands, I'm in no rush to see it.

That doesn't even make sense! A video game and a film are entirely different mediums and have different rating systems!
It hasn't nothign to do with being "dumbed down" - in a film you can show violence in more subtle ways.
Have you even seen the film?!
