Ok, So I'm modeling a PS3 for a room scene I'm making, and I just realized that I have never had to put text on a curved surface before In case you don't know how it looks, here is a PS3:

ps3

So I have modeled the general shape of the PS3 (will add details soon). Now what I want to do is add the "Playstation 3" text on top of the PS3. But as you can see the PS3 top surface is curved. So here is where I'm at:

I have downloaded the Spiderman 3 font, and made the text in Maya (its a curve, so its invisible without extrusion when rendered) As you can see from the below images the text is in "stencil" format and above the PS3:

So what I'm asking is is there a way to "merge" the playstation text onto the PS3 with the appropriate curves, that way I can extrude it from the surface and get it to look like the real deal? I know there is a way, does anyone know how to do it? Would be very grateful if you could help.

Off the top of my head, try just seperating the Playstation into letters, then applying them one at a time. Sorry i couldn't be more of a help, its late here:P.

I actually have a book on Maya with me right now, so let me see if I can find it in here.

Edit: Sadly, can't really find anything that could help out on this.

Why not just make a UV map of your object then place a texture on it? That's the professional way to do it.

Yeah, seperating and independant allignment is hard and unrewarding. Just add the text to the texture map.

Your best bet is to Convert the model in to polys. And and the geomtry afterwards.

If you dont want to do that what you could do is creat a playstaion logo bumpmap and project it onto the object.

hmm. I see how it is. I'm usually in a position where I have to model and provide a texture.

If you can't get someone else to make a texture, try taking a shot at creating one.

When is your deadline (if any)?

Maya doesn't handle bump mapping very well though depending on what the model is going to be used for.

Well he could still use a displacement map. Im sure. And it would come out fine.

I don't have a deadline, just messing around for fun. The first thing I learned when I did 3d modeling was organic modeling. It just felt so easy for me. Creating flowers, animals, people. And then a friend of mine asked me to day to model his room, and I was like "Wtf!? This is hard as hell!" So im learning the steps and trying to model every item in his room and then make a room scene to render. IMO Organic modeling > Inorganic modeling...too many measurements and strict dimensions to follow in inorganic modeling. In organic modeling, you can fudge it a bit here and there to get what you want.

Well, if it's anything like 3ds Max (which I assume it is), then all you'd do is use these modifiers: 1) Extrude the Text 2) Bend the text 3) Attach the text using some Boolean modifier. If all you want is just the text on the top with no actual geometry, then yeah, a texture is the way to go.

there's several ways for you can do it. - you can project the shape to the object. (i don't recommend this one for what you're doing) - make the face a live-surface. (this has multiple steps and i don't feel like giving a walk-through) - blend the shape (text). (easy, but repetitive) - make a texture. (the easiest one to do. and i see you already have photoshop open.)
