Chances you ever design weapons are very low.. no matter what degree you get. Now if you want to work for a company that produces weapons.. thats much more likely.

Mechanical engineering is needed for just about any weapon, so yes. If you really want to design weapons, you should research companies that do that, and find out what degrees their people have. Mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, materials science, and many other disciplines are used in designing weapons.

Get ahold of their HR departments, or their recruiters. They'll tell you what kind of expertise they're hiring.

A left field question would be 'what degree should I have to join ACORN?'

You can't go wrong w/ME or EE, depending on what type of platform you want to work aerospace engineering or advanced materials could be very awesome. Just FYI each individual service has research labs as well - AFRL, NRL, etc. And keep your nose clean, a lot of the jobs in those labs require TS clearance = EXTENSIVE background checks.
