who ever said that is ignorant, and obviously isn't a metal head. Metallica did one of the worst things someone can do for Metal; commercialize it.
Iron Maiden. Maybe some Iced Earth. And a little Burzum of course. ;)
It would be good if you could tell us what sort of metal your planning on getting into atm. There is a lot of variety in the genre. You cant really go wrong with most thrash metal but are you looking for something heavy and slowish (Black metal, i guess), or screamy/growly(death metal), or fast (power/speed metal), or even classical influenced and epic (symphonic/melodic metal) but prehaps tell us a couple of those types as often bands overlap or have a few songs in each of those categories.rb2610
Heavy and Slowish is the opposite of black metal.

Cob hardcore? ROFL that's priceless. CoB have been a starter band for many people. Come to me when you can handle the big boy stuff.
Edit: Screw it. I'm just gonna go ahead and give you this list.
Kreator, Therion, Wintersun, Ensiferum, Sodom, Destruction, Demilich, Darkthrone, Electric Wizard, Boris, Immortal, Mayhem, Burzum, Gorgoroth, Satyricon, Carpathian Forest, Thorns, Emperor, Cathedral, !T.O.O.H.!, Napalm Death, Kampfar, Protected Illusion, Cynic, Atheist, Nocturnus, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Watchtower, Mekong Delta, Necrophagist, Gorguts, Kataklysm, Cryptopsy, Kronos, Hammerfall, Entombed, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Candlemass, Keelhaul, The Lord Weird Slough Feg, Sigh, Amon Amarth, Lykathea Aflame, Terrorizer, Phlebotomized, Suffocation, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Swarrrm, Death
I just started liking Metal (It's been about 3 months, I think). Until now, I'm only familiar with Metallica and love their songs (I'm not referring to the new songs). I'm not into the other metal bands like Children of Bodom, not yet anyway. I feel like they're too "hardcore" :P for a guy who's just starting out, if you know what I mean... So I would really appreciate it if anybody could recommend some good Metal bands (from that sort) for a start... Xx_AxL_xX
Slipknot O.o
I like how some people seem to use the heaviness of metal bands to make it it like makes them manlier.
Anywho,
Pantera, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Iced Earth, Anthrax, High on Fire, Mastodon (amazing!!!), King Diamond, Slayer.
Well, clearly Megadeth, Black Sabbath (Make sure you go beyond the Ozzy era, I prefer their stuff with Dio) and Iron Maiden are necessities. I'd also recommend Iced Earth, Death Angel, Dream Theater and lots of power metal if that strikes your fancy (DragonForce, Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Helloween, Rhapsody of Fire, Elvenking etc.). You might want to check out some metalcore that falls on the more melodic side, like In This Moment (No other really melodic metalcore comes to mind at the moment). You also might want to check out some Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold, HIM (Especially their new album Venus Doom, their older stuff isn't all that heavy but I love it anyway), and you might like Protest The Hero or The Human Abstract. Oh, and you might want to see what you think of Shadows Fall (I'd recommend Threads of Life, their latest). They might be good for bridging the gap between the lighter stuff and the heavier stuff.
Hope this helps!
