I just started liking Metal (It's been about 3 months, I think). Until now, I'm only familiar with Metallica and love their songs (I'm not referring to the new songs). I'm not into the other metal bands like Children of Bodom, not yet anyway. I feel like they're too "hardcore" :P for a guy who's just starting out, if you know what I mean... So I would really appreciate it if anybody could recommend some good Metal bands (from that sort) for a start...

Check out Sentenced, the albums "The Cold White Light", "The Funeral Album", "Down" or "Frozen". They are all pretty awesome. Here is the song Everfrost from The Funeral Album.

Black Sabbath would probably your best natural evolutions.

"Most people who say Black Sabbath invented Heavy Metal will agree that Metallica perfected it"

Based on that quote its at least something you should check out.

CoB to heavy? hmm. Try researching soem power metal maybe. Also try out folk metal, for example Korpiklaani and although i don't really listen to them much anymore Dimmu Borgir and Hammerfall were my gateway bands. You want to find bands with growling vocals and get an ear for it. Once you do the world of metal expands massively.

Megadeth, its quite similar to Metallica.

Go on last.fm and search metal or metallica and see similar artists.

I just have to say Cathedral is Black Sabbath-ish and Carcass (Hearwork, Swansong) because they're not really heavy in those newer albums but have the growling vocals.

who ever said that is ignorant, and obviously isn't a metal head. Metallica did one of the worst things someone can do for Metal; commercialize it.

Most of these recommendations suck. He doesn't want anything less understandable than Pantera, and as a rule, 95% of power metal is terrible. I have seen one post that actually helps the TC out.

Unfortunately, the only way for the TC to judge is to listen to each of them, as I am not gonna go nitpick through this crap.

It would be good if you could tell us what sort of metal your planning on getting into atm. There is a lot of variety in the genre. You cant really go wrong with most thrash metal but are you looking for something heavy and slowish (Black metal, i guess), or screamy/growly(death metal), or fast (power/speed metal), or even classical influenced and epic (symphonic/melodic metal) but prehaps tell us a couple of those types as often bands overlap or have a few songs in each of those categories.

I like how some people seem to use the heaviness of metal bands to make it it like makes them manlier.

Anywho,

Pantera, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Iced Earth, Anthrax, High on Fire, Mastodon (amazing!!!), King Diamond, Slayer.

Well, clearly Megadeth, Black Sabbath (Make sure you go beyond the Ozzy era, I prefer their stuff with Dio) and Iron Maiden are necessities. I'd also recommend Iced Earth, Death Angel, Dream Theater and lots of power metal if that strikes your fancy (DragonForce, Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Helloween, Rhapsody of Fire, Elvenking etc.). You might want to check out some metalcore that falls on the more melodic side, like In This Moment (No other really melodic metalcore comes to mind at the moment). You also might want to check out some Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold, HIM (Especially their new album Venus Doom, their older stuff isn't all that heavy but I love it anyway), and you might like Protest The Hero or The Human Abstract. Oh, and you might want to see what you think of Shadows Fall (I'd recommend Threads of Life, their latest). They might be good for bridging the gap between the lighter stuff and the heavier stuff.

Hope this helps!

CoB is not all that heavy. In Flames is really good. Check out their new stuff if you aren't into really heavy yet. Their older stuff is much heavier. Power metal in general is pretty light as far as metal goes. Sonata Arctica and Evergrey are two of my favorites. Once you get into heavier stuff you should defenitely check out A Life Once Lost, Psyopis, and The Human Abstract. Those guys are very intricate musicians and come up with some very interesting stuff as far as pop culture type music goes.
