Alright then, lets make a scenario. Lets say a group of drunken metalheads just came out of a thrash metal gig and they headed straight towards the liquor store, and on the other direction a group of punk rockers also just finished watching a gig, both groups seem to spot each other and course, drunken and stupid, they began to shout at each other on how much their music style sucks and all of the sudden they rush each other. Which group will win?

Metal has been heavily influenced by Punk, especially Thrash (like metallica) so I think any educated music fan would ignore it. Then again, most "metalheads" and "punkers" don't know anything about the genre they claim to love.

Well actually Punk, Thrash, and Hardcore all spawn from original metal as do the rest of the metal sub-genres.  Punk may have influenced some metal sub-genres but power metal or black metal are jusr 2 sub genres that really draw nothing from punk at all and if you get people who are really into Black Sabbath and the like you can see there is absolutely no punk influence.  Punk, hardcore, and thrash are still very closely related though.

I'm not denying Metal's influence on Punk, but rather way too lazy to go in depth on how those genres have intertwined over the years. Punk, hardcore, thrash, crust, all bleed into metal and have influenced a lot of current metal bands and artists. Rather than giving a historical account of what subgenre changed and merged into another is a waste of time, and I realized that after I had started writing my previous paragraph, where I ended it with a breif notice on the subject

Either way, any person who understands music is very unlikely to start a brawl about it. But like I said: the typical Metalheads and Punkers are stupid.

A group of Power/viking/folk metal head will come own them with their swords and armour.  While the Black Metalers sit across the street sipping wine from a chalice, the the death metalers will come and eat the gory aftermath.

I was on another site and there was a genre battle thread like this at one point and it ended up being the most hilarious music thread ever.

On topic:  They eventually progress into political and sociocultural topics, and merge into one drunken Neo-Nazi mob, and kill the homeless black guy in front of the liquor store.  Then, under the influence of the alcohol, realize that the world is pain and mutate into emotive hardcore kids.  And then just stop listening to music altogether, because now they're not drunk anymore.

I only know three forms of rock & roll. Rock, metal and Alternative. Both metal and Rock have their distinguished differences and punk is the only alternative with distinguished signiture differences. The rest of the style are just some form of rock, metal or punk with trivial differences. For many of the other rock and roll forms they just whore a chord, dress a certain way and sing about certain things. They're hybrids that take all of the creativity out of rock & roll by conform everything into sub genres.

But anyway.. It's a What if question. There's so assesment of fighting ability nor handicaps. You might as well ask. *If this group of guys and this other group of guys locked horns who would win?*

*So I guess whichever reslult fufils your fantasy* would be the answer.

I'm sure both groups would just buy more liqueur and get wasted together.

Yes, but  fans of other kind of music do know the genre they claim to love? =/   It happens everywhere, with any kind of music and any kind of people. The problem with metal is that it's extremely wide, it probably has more sub-genres than any other music genre, and people thinkt hat by listening to the mainstream acts they know it all. e_e

My opinion is that the metalhead group has more chance of winning, but then again it might be goth-metal fans and it's surely made up of 80% girls and they'd lose. xD
