Mine's metric. Hands down.

I'm sick of doing any physics calculations with imperial units. (Need to convert inch to foot, pound-mass to pound-force, etc)

Metric is a 100x easier to use than the Imperial.

What I hate about Canada is that we so easily jump between metric and imperial units. Half of everything is commonly measured in metric and the other half in imperial. It pisses me off when I constantly have to do conversions.

I highly prefer metric. It is base-10 and SUPER simple to do in your head.

Metric ftw! Only cause I live in Aus and it's very annoying doing calculations with imperial measurements and having to convert everything.

The Metric system makes perfect sense and is easily understood, converted and applied in any situation, mostly because it works the same way as our actual number system does. The Imperial system I can see being conceived by a child "Hey! Let's make a unit of measurement... THIS LONG! And HEY! Let's have the next unit of measurement be.... THIS MANY OF THOSE ONES! And HEY! "Let's have an entire mass system based off equally arbitrary and inane fractions and proportions!"

I imagined that more people will vote for imperial units, since most of GS users are Americans.

I'm American, and I say metric. There's a very good reason metric is the preferred unit in science. It's easier and makes more sense. America and England should just switch. They're just being stubborn.

Metric is so much simpler to use since it's in increments of 10. Imperial switches with basically every different length standard. I'm American by the way.

How many feet are in a mile? How many Teaspoons in pound?

I could never hope to tell you these things off hand. The system has no real logic. It's a relic from when people actually used their bodies and common objects to make measurements. And relics deserve no place in modern society.

I don't see how anyone could pick Imperial.

The Metric system is what I've used for the past 4 years in my science classes and its just soo much better.

Teaspoons are a measure of volume, not weight. You should've asked "how many teaspoons in a tablespoon". That would've sent me to Wikipedia.

only 3 countries use imperial as their main system. America and like two other random countries from the middle east/africa. Britian has changed to metric as its main but still puts on imperial along side of metric; no products or anything would be allowed to have solely imperial. I HATE imperial. The system has zero logic and is just plain old annoying. I cannot wait until the useless imperial system dies off.

Actually I meant to say cup. Although frankly I mix up the units far more than I should. The system is confusing!

Metric >>>> Imperial. Doing engineering physics in the imperial system is a NIGHTMARE.

I can understand why America has held off switching though, its very expensive to do a complete switch of units (imagine just the number of road signs that would need to be changed). With the economy the way it is, a switch isn't going to happen anytime soon.

They could at least start by putting both measurements onto new signs and labels.

The only thing I find annoying with metric is how they say people's height in cm. Why the hell do you guys do that? For scientific or math things I see why you would be so precise, but for a day to day bases, ew. Although, I get annoyed with many number things and how people say them. Such as when people say "fifteen hundred" to mean 1500. And when someone say a baby is 17 months old. Most of all though I hate when people say grades instead of a kids age. Of course I hate the organization level of schools in general. But that's a different subject. So, original question, why not 1m, 85cm? Bleh, that sounds crappy too. (and isn't any different) I'll make you a deal, implement inches and feet into the metric system, then we'll take everything else as is. Length is really the only one used on a day to day bases and thus needs to be accessible with as little thought as possible. (I know temperature is also used often, but each side is just incrementing numbers, no difference really on usability.)

Metric, definitely. I guess it kind of depends what you've grown up with and been taught though. I'm Australian, so it was metric. I'm sure if I had grown up in America, it would probably be Imperial as I would understand it. :P

Imperial. Metric is good for converting but who really converts measurements on a day to day basis (average person).

metric should be normal. more people would probably be less afraid of math and science if we went to it.

I can't believe people don't choose metric. Familiarity is a bad excuse for the worst measurement system, and it's embarrasing that america doesn't switch because of people who can't make a slight adjustment.

also, we should just eliminate celcius and move entirely to kelvin, where zero is the coldest temperature possible. converting celcius to kelvin is a pain. it's only adding, but it would still be easier with one form of temperature.

metric is better.

Newton's Second Law

Force = Mass*Acceleration

Metric: (Newton) = (kilogram)*(metres/second^2)

Imperial: (pound-force) = (pound-mass)*(feet/second^2)*(1 pound-force/32.1740 pound*feet/second^2)

That explains everything.

precisely. it should be phased out. the sooner the better. the first step is always the hardest.

people would probably hate math and science less if we switched.

The thing is, why should most people give a damn? I hardly even know the imperial system and it doesn't effect my life at all. Why would I go out of my way to learn a new way to do something I hardly ever use?
