Greetings denizens of Gamespot, and welcome back to the next instalment of what's to be an ongoing exploration into the strangest and darkest reaches of the internet ? the mind of a moderator.

Important to note that this is not just an Off Topic thing, but a Q&A that encompasses all of Gamespot, with mods from across the boards and where all users are welcome to participate. There are sticky notifications in all the major discussion boards (General Gaming Discussion and System Wars) So you'll interact with the mods you're familiar with and get to know the others from different parts of the forums.

Oh you might think the life of a moderator is all champagne and caviar, fame & fortune, and prestige beyond measure. But let me assure you fine folks that nothing could be farther from the truth. For one thing we don't even get paid for what we do :P So now peer beneath the veil as you get to find out what makes us tick. Each week (from Wed-Wed), one of us will assume the Hot Seat and take questions from you, the life blood of this community. Oh sure you could ask us what our favourite food is, or movie, or actor, or get our opinions on gaming. But why stop there? Want to know what super power we would choose if we could possess one? Where we would go if we could travel in time? Who we think would win in a fight between Wolverine and Sonic the Hedgehog?

Be inventive. Be imaginative. By all means push us to the brink of our sanity  And while some playful ribbing is permitted here (even encouraged ;) ), don't get outright offensive or insulting. TOU rules still apply. But also let me emphasise although you can ask about our experiences as a mod, this isn't about moderation inquiries, or a supplement to Ask the Mods. Also mods will reserve the right not to answer a question if it gets too personal.Think of it more like we're all just chillin' at a bar, getting to know each other in conversation and just having fun. Take it as a social experience.

OUR BODIES ARE READY!!

And welcome our spiciest moderator, ChiliDragon. Ready for your opening salvo? :)

****

Gender?
The XX one.
Where are you from?
Originally, from Sweden.
How did you come up with your user name?
If you take the first two letters of my first name and the first two of my maiden name and put them together, it's pronounced "chili" in Swedish. I added dragon after, because dragons are awesome.
The boards you frequent most, and unions you're a member of?
I mainly hang out in the PC Games forum and the Hardware Discussion forum, and I'm a member of The Drunken PC Snobs union.

Do you enjoy Chili? And is eating it considered a form of cannibalism for you?
Yes, and no. :P
Which style of dragon do you prefer? Chinese, serpentine body with short limbs and the facial hair, or European, the winged fire breathing reptiles?
The European kind ,since that's what I grew up with. I'm also fond of the wyrms, the giant serpents that breath acid.
What would surprise you most to see at E3 this year?
An educated and well informed effort by Microsoft to get back into PC gaming, by launching something that actually appeals to PC gamers.
Who is your favourite actor and actress?
Denzel Washington and Natalie Portman.
What's the last book you read?
"When Darkness Falls", by James Grippando.
Who would win in a fight? Godzilla or Puff the Magic Dragon?

Do you love Bioware as much as Jim?

I used to love her. But then she changed. She became a completely different person, someone who didn't care enough to try and understand me anymore. I'm now in a loving relationship with CDProject Red, and we are very happy together. She understands me and respects me, and doesn't just want me for my money.

What are some of the biggest differences that you've noticed between U.S. and Europe politically, religiously and culturally? Politically: The US system is so focused on the extreme white and black that they refuse to acknowledge the existence of a gray scale. The European system is so focused on giving every single shade of gray a fair chance to be heard that they have no idea how to squash irrelevant opinions in the name of actually getting anything done. Religiously: In Sweden, freedom of religion means, freedom from being forced to endure someone else's religion. In the US, freedom of religion means "freedom to shove your uber-sickening twisted version of Christianity in the face of everyone around you". Culturally: Americans think sex is inherently bad. Europeans think sex is a natural part of life and should be enjoyed whenever it is safe to do so. Name your seven favorite female characters in gaming history. In no particular order, and keeping in mind that I'm tired right now: Kreia, from Knights of the Old Republic 2 Garnet Til Alexandros from Final Fantasy IX Fall-From-Grace, from Planescape:Torment Koudelka, from Koudelka Chris Lightfellow, from Suikoden III Sialeeds, from Suikoden V Seth, from Lost Odyssey What are your biggest gaming pet peeves with regards to the gaming industry at the moment? That game developers persist in treating female gamers as if we are morons. What is your favorite sport and what do you like about it? NBA basketball. And I like it because it is one of the few sports where a team of lesser talent can defeat a team of super-stars, as long as they put the team's success ahead of personal goals, are in tune with one another, and care more about team wins than their own personal goals. If you could kick one man, anywhere, in the nuts with a full windup, who would that man be and why? Rush Limbaugh. Because he hates and despises women so very much that I would feel I owe it to any proud and self-sufficient woman in the US to try and hit that very small target.

I didn't think it had to be said, but player customized characters, and especially ones that aren't restricted by gender don't count :P

So who's your favourite among scripted female characters?

I believe I just gave Jim a list. :)

Yay, it's Chilidragon! :> 1. What political ideology do you most closely align yourself with? Do you even care about politics? I do care about politics. In Sweden I was a social conservative, in my portion of the US I am considered a super-left-wing liberal. 2. Cats or dogs - which do you prefer? I love cats. I adore cats. I prefer cats. That said, a couple of months ago, my husband and I adopted a puppy from the local animal shelter. She is obnoxious, annoying, and overly energetic. She is also affectionate, feisty, cheerful and loving, and so desperately craving attention and affection that I really don't want to say no to her. So why I remain a cat person in every way, I do still love this one dog. She is adorable.

Hello. Ever watched Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex? I have been watching it lately and I'm liking it so far. Also, I saw the new hot seat thread, so I thought I would ask you or whoever else was in it what they thought about the show.

I vaguely remember watching that show a few years ago. I also remember liking it.

So the other day I decided to post hot chicks on Gamespot Fuse,it was all within the TOU but do you(personally)think I should have done?and yeah it kinda p*ssed off the female commuinty

You're allowed to post whatever you want that doesn't break the TOU, as long as you're willing to face the consequences. Especially if you post something that others disagree with.

What is your favorite martial arts style and why do you like it? My far too brief exposure to Kenpo Karate made me very eager to learn more about it, so I guess that makes it a favorite. Favorite to watch is easy though: Traditional kung fu. If you could take one character from any JRPG and strangle them to death in a bathtub before they ever made it into the game they appeared in, which character would you retconn kill? Why? Almost all the young "perky" girl NPCs in the Final Fantasy franchise. If you could take one thing that JRPGs do that you really like and have WRPGs do the same, what would it be? If you could take one thing that WRPGs do that you really like and have JRPGs do the same, what would it be? I would make all WRPGs obsessively focused on being single-player only. And I'd add the ability to alter the plot and influence the outcome to JRPGs If you could wave a magic wand and have one political issue in the U.S. instantly be resolved permanently and irrevocably the way you want it to be, which one would you choose and how would you like it resolved? I would make same-sex marriage legal and permitted in every state. Do you think Jesus ever had sex? I've never thought about it. I don't see why not though. What's your favorite love interest from any video game you've ever played? Oh, that's difficult... and it's a bit of a trick question. Atton Rand wasn't actually a love interest in the official version of KotOR II. May I have a harem? No.

Can't comment on the politics but you really hit the nail on the head when it came to American/European attitudes on religion and sex.
Also am very disappoint not to see Lara Croft in your list of female characters :|

So a couple more questions;

* Who became a moderator first? You or Jim? Jim was a moderator long before I was. And therin who greased the palms to get the other their position? ;) No palm-greasing took place. :P I volunteered and was offered the job. * If America and Sweden went to war, which army would you enlist with in the fight? I wouldn't. I'd move to Canada and start a new life there.

If yes, how many moderations do you have? I have eight moderations in my history, most of them for trolling or flaming. Have you two ever fought over something posted on GS? Do we have actual arguments about things posted on Gamespot? not really .Do we always agree about everything on here? Not at all. :)

Does Jim bare any resemblance to his avatar here, and on a scale of 1 to 10, how good is he at baby making Jim isn't nearly as blue in real life. Unless you count his eyes. And I have no idea of his baby making skills, since we have jointly decided not to have babies. He's very good at sex though. :D also, are you annoyed at the fact that people keep asking about jim? Not at all. OT is his turf, I am only a visitor. There are other areas of the internet, and of Gamespot, where I am the regular and he is the visitor. It all evens out in the end.

What do you think developers should do in order to write female characters better? Stop being so hung up on the "female" part. Just write a good character, and let the gender/sex just be one of many aspects of that character. After that, make the character relevant. Far too often it seem like the female characters are there only to be eye-candy, or because they're supposed to be there, or because the developers wanted to cater to a certain customer segment--based on said female characters, it's the "very juvenile males who have never seen a real woman in person and are desperate for any sort of fantasy, no matter how unrealistic it is" demographic--but there is nothing unique about that female character beyond that point. Or if she does bring anything to the table it's secondary to her deep and unrealistic cleavage, and her long naked legs. In other words, make the character matter as a character. How do you make female characters in games both sexy but also effective and serious? Why do they have to be sexy? There's lots of male characters and NPCs who are seriously lacking sex appeal. But to answer your question, by making the sexy part an after-thought, or not focusing on it at all when developing the character. A strong and capable woman, who also is very athletic, is automatically sexy. There is no need to force her into an absurdly revealing and impractical outfit just to make sure she is noticed. If Nariko from Heavely Sword had been allowed to wear an actually useful and realistic leather armor she would still have been a knock-out, maybe even more so. But I guess the developers were aiming for an audience so stupid and lacking in imagination that only nakedness holds any visual appeal at all for them? What are some characters from books, movies, etc. that you feel are great examples that the video game industry should emulate when writing female characters? Almost all the females in A Game of Thrones. Galadriel, from Lord of the Rings. Queen Minna-Satu, from The Queen's Blade. Lucy Pevensie from The Narnia Chronicles. What game out there needs a sequel or a remake the most? Who should do that sequel or remake? Planescape:Torment, remade to full voice acting and modern graphics, but leaving everything else the same. Just thinking about that makes me sexually aroused.... and CDPR should be the ones making it, since they are awesome. Who is your favorite current developer and why? CD Project Red, for several reasons. They don't strangle their games with evil DRM garrottes. They understand the importance of continuing to support a game way past release. They make games that are different, in a good way, and that earn their M-rating and flaunt it proudly. They understand that "mature content" is about a lot more than sex and nudity. The Witcher had racism, corruption in government and churches, poverty, prostitution, drug abuse, and portrayed all of it without trying to make it pretty or more palatable to an easily offended audience. In other words, CDPR assume that if I bought the game I'm a mature adult that can handle mature content. After years of dealing with EA's juvenile attempts at being controversial without being offensive, it's a nice change of pace to be treated as an adult be a game developer. Who is your least favorite current developer and why? Bioware. The deeper the love was, the deeper the hate once the love is gone. How could you leave Mona Sax from the Max Payne games and Jessica Albert from Dragon Quest VIII off of your list of best female characters? Wife, I am disappoint. I left Mona Sax out since I didn't actually finish that game, so I didn't think she was allowed. As for Jessica Albert... I have no excuse. I am ashamed. You love building your own PCs, why do you enjoy it so much? It's a puzzle. It involves research, hardware reviews, comparing numbers talking to others who also like it about what good and what's not, and at the end, I get to build something. By themselves, most PC components are pretty much useless, but if you put the right ones together the right way, you get a machine that can do magic. I can't draw, paint, sculpt, compose, or dance. My artistic talent is limited to writing, and to applying makeup in creative ways... but building a computer means I created something. And I love that sense of accomplishment when it's all done, and it boots the operating system for the very first time, and everything works. I built something. I created, and now it creates with me. :) What's the bravest decision you ever saw a developer make? Most craven? Bravest: Difficult, difficult... but I think Bioware's decision to make same-sex romances an option for both sexes in their RPGs long before homosexual NPCs were common, deserves to be mentioned here. Most craven: "We decided to entirely leave Mona Sax out of Max Payne 3" Which game do you think had the highest potential that it failed to reach? Knights of the Old Republic II: Sith Lords. Who do you think will win the NBA title this year now that our favorite team (Lakers) has been eliminated? Either the San Antonio Spurs or the OKC Thunder. Both teams are deep and well constructed, and have great on-court chemistry (as a result of having played together for a long time). They are also focused and highly motivated, and they are both very well coached. The Western Conference Finals are going to be an orgy of good basketball, and I'm looking forward to watching them take each other on. Why did you decide to be a Gamespot moderator? What do you like the most about the job? The least? I decided to be a Gamespot moderator because I thought I could help a great community stay great, and what I like the most is when I get to do that. What I like the least is that all the funniest jokes and YouTube videos I know are against the ToU, and as a moderator I have to lead by example and not share them here. ;) What's your favorite comic strip of all time? I have always liked this XKCD strip:grownups.png

Now seems like a good time to close up this round. But with a tie in the poll, and so few votes (only 9) I'm not sure this is going anywhere.

If you could biiiatch slap one woman, anywhere, who would you slap and why? Sarah Palin, for setting women in politics back by about 75 years here in the US. Though I admit that she did help me appreciate Hillary Clinton a lot more. What is Jesus thinking here? I think that's a picture of his reaction when he realized that when Sarah Palin said that she was qualified to be President of the United States because she can see Russia of her house, she actually believed it. So, Chili, what do you love about gaming? Everything!:P It's an escape. I wrote a blog about it once, I think. Better immortal, Duncan McCloud or Connor McCloud? Justify! Duncan. Connor has a couple of movies, Duncan got a whole TV series, and he is friends with Methos. Also, he is much sexier. You are offered your choice between a $2K various gemstone ring or $2K worth of PC parts. Pick one. Caveat is that your husband will sometimes view porn on the PC if you go that route. Is this a serious question? How many times have I told you that if you want to buy me something small, expensive, and shiny, buy me a new CPU? Best Bioware RPG of all time? Justify. Knights of the Old Republic, for the NPCs, the different planetary environments, the very different story branches depending on whether you are Light or Dark, and for having one of the best "WTF???... oh wait, that make total sense!" moments in gaming. You have an opportunity to smother the baby Hitler in his cradle with a pillow with a happy unicorn on it, do you do so? Of course not. I take the baby, and then take steps to make sure he is raised in a home where he will not be physically and emotionally abused, but instead is allowed and encouraged to pursue his dream of becoming a painter. Oh, and he would not be allowed to enroll in the army to serve in World War I. Whatever made Adolf Hitler go on a mass-genocidal world war rampage was not in his DNA, and nurture practically always beats nature. Did Bill Clinton REALLY bone Elizabeth Gracen? If he managed it, is this proof that he has honest-to-god magical powers? I have no idea. As Ms Gracen said when she was asked, it's none of our business who she chooses to sleep with. A terrorist is pointing a gun at your head and you're forced to strangle one member of my immediate family. Who do you choose and why? (I promise not to tell them.) No. I will not live with that on my conscience. You want one of them dead, you do it. (And while you are distracted trying to kill them, I'll do my best to kill you back. No one hurts my family.) Can I have a SMALL harem? You have a small harem already. Me. ;)

Alright, so we extended the poll, and it looks like it'll be Teufulhuhn next. But what with E3 fast approaching, which will become the central focus of discussion for a good while, not to mention the madness on the forums that shall ensue, I think it best to resume this after the storm subsides.
