Are there any really good modern composers, active right now? I stress that last part, because usually when I ask this question people reccomend the so-called modern composers, as in 19th, and 20th century ones (like Aaron Copland). I mean, are there any who have recently released works, and are composing new works? Anyone who has done some really great symphonies, and could possibly be working on something to rival Beethoven's 9th?

I'd prefer someone who focuses on symphonies, because shorter works don't often capture my attention. Any reccomendation is fine though. When I try to browse modern composers in iTunes, most of them are early 20th century composers, and I can't find anything recently composed.

Thanks.

Thanks! I'll check those out. Any specific works?

Wow! I listened to the sample of Nane's Adagio for Piano and Orchestra, and it's amazing. I want that, but for some reason it isn't on iTunes...I really don't want to order it through Amazon... I might get his symphonies on iTunes eventually. Thanks.

I don't think he's done anything in awhile but Steve Reich is definitely a composer worth checking out.

lawl....Alternative to iTunes, that's like saying there is an alternative to breathing (that doesn't involve dying) :P The Apple way is the only way for me...

I like Final Fantasy, but I don't consider Uematsu a composer, really....I don't really consider movie score composers, classical composers either. They can be great (like Zimmer), but it's not the same.

Stephen Sondheim? He's probably the best musical theatre composer/lyricisist. Granted, his last major work was in 1994. But his musical scores are very impressive, such as the ones for Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park With George, Assassins, and Into the Woods.

Or, if you can't stand musical theatre, Jon Schmidt.

The only one I like is Philip Glass. His music has a mood that is similar to Claude Debussy's. He is often called a minimalist, but he doesn't approve of that. He instead refers to his compositions as "music with repeating structures". He is pretty prolific as well.
