I think that still can be a matter of opinion. I love Monopoly, but I understand what others mean though when they explain it is vastly overrated. I don't even find it overrated though, call me crazy but I don't find anything really wrong with the game.
I think it can ruin friendships/relationships, but only if your buddies or mate can actually be quite the hothead and/or severely don't understand/can't handle games like it. I mean I've played at least 5 - 7 times in the past with friends at school/family members, and I don't really remember any big fights or tension going on.
I enjoy playing the game from time to time, with the right group of people (i.e. those who understand it's basic structure and point).
It's designed to not have an "end point". Unlike most board games, there is literally no way to finish the game outside of bankrupting every other player. Which, could mean a game that lasts indefinitely if the properties are evenly distributed and developed properly (i.e. every turn has $500-1500 moving around the table). On top of that, aside from conniving and back-room deals, there is nothing to the game in terms of skill, it's all luck-based on the rolls of the dice.
Monopoly City, a more modernized version of the game with more "building" aspects, has several end-game scenarios that make for a 1-2 hour game, and it requires more thinking and strategy than the original version of the game.
The only game I can think of that's worse than Monopoly for "taking forever to finish" is Diplomacy. But that game is supposed to be somewhat of a satire of the political atmosphere at the time of the lead up to the First World War. However, THAT game is entirely skill based. There is literally no dice.
