They have and it always comes back we wouldn't do well. It's hard to search for an article on it, because putting immigration in gets too many hits (I used other words, but still, not gonna bother)

Your not funny.
Don't think he was trying to be funny.
Well...lets see! Everyone go take this test:

Report back when done and tell us how you did! I am going to take it as well, cya in a min :)

85%, answered too fast on the Congress number (answered Senate number, completely stupid cuz I know that one), didn't know the voting amendment number, and did a duh on the constitution signing year by putting the Declaration year. Only one I truly didn't know, just went through too fast on two of them (as I always do on mult. choice). Still passing though :)

Do you understand the science behind polling?
yes, they pick people of different age, class and gender.
What's your point? It's still stupid, since it's only 1,000.

As long as they did proper selections (random or wide & varied demographics), it's a valid sample.I mean, you wouldn't want to include children (they could actually falsel skew numbers up, as they get these things thrown at them in school), anyone of ill mental capacity, etc. It's not like it's a small percentage off, either, least then I could discuss it all being in a deviation.

My point is that polls like these usually have 5,000-10,000 participants. 1,000 istoo inaccurate.

95%... and I'm Canadian. The only one I missed was the 'which form is used to apply for naturalization' question. Irony FTW.

Based on what? Your personal opinion? Sorry dude, they are accurate to a pretty good degree, and the accuracy is backed up by actual science, not some guy on GS.

yeah exactly it's probably just a bad test.
If either of you bothered to take a basic statistics course you would know that 1,000 subjects is more than enough to get valid, accurate results. In fact, the magic number is 600, although you can begin inferring with reasonably accurate results starting at just 40.

Cut the crap..
We're analyzing polls like this all the time in sociology class. And I'm telling you, 1,000 is inaccurate. 5,000-10,000 is the standard. You on the other hand, obviously don't know what you're talking about.

I wouldn't think so. Our schools have alwayas pumped a consistant amount of our nation's history into our heads... or maybe I'm one of the only people that payed attention... We'll never know unless they survey us too.

Well, what people tend to forget is that for most people, they really only remember what they need to, not for ignorance or anything, just that when you have to deal with certain sets of information over and over again, then you tend to just recall that. So for people that are citizens, they won't remember these facts because, well... it's not going to change there life if they do or don't know it. All they have to deal with every now & again are GS forum members going "I bet USA does worse than us!" Everyone is always hatin' on the guys at the top (get ready for the same, China!)

As posted before:
Gallup and other major organizations use sample sizes
of between 1,000 and 1,500 because they provide a solid balance of accuracy against the
increased economic cost of larger and larger samples. If Gallup were to -- quite expensively --
use a sample of 4,000 randomly selected adults each time it did its poll, the increase in
accuracy over and beyond a well-done sample of 1,000 would be minimal, and generally
speaking, would not justify the increase in cost.
From the Gallup Poll website.
Don't tell me it's "inaccurate", because it absolutely is not. 5,000 is merely incrementallymore accurate, but not by much. This in no way makes 1,000 "inaccurate". YOU dont know what you are talking about.
