Teacher showed this in class today. I almost cried at the thought of this happening, not really but it is pretty crazy. Oh and great song.

i don't find it depressing, i'd love for something like that to happen in my lifetime... maybe not as big though.
but something that completely changes the way we live IE hostile weather conditions, another ice age would be good.
it might wake some people up and show them what really matters. :)
we are nothing compared to the universe.
it would suck. i guess it didn't really "depress" me. but if every single person and everything we've worked for was just wiped out we would be nothing and never would have been anything, all past and future accomplishments/people/etc would be nothing. Idk I think strangely. haha sorry

Yeah even the smallest asteroid impact would completely change the world forever. I can see what your saying, a dramatic change would be interesting. Id prefer one that didn't wipe out millions of people and definitely not the ice age :P haha
how is that Depressing, i thought it was pretty cool :P

The video was cool. But I don't think it would be cool if our entire species and every accomplishment we ever made just disappeared.
How come nothing that devastating has hit another planet yet? Not doubting it's possibility, just wondering.

The chances of it a very very slim. It wont happen

quite a big one hit jupiter a while back, created a massive crater.if that had hit us it would've done quite a fair bit of damage.
I'm not sure that's even possible.
I mean yeah an Asteroid could and will hit us. But really the Asteroid in that video looked to be the size of Russia or something. In which case it would probably shatter the planet.
Either way an Asteroid will eventually hit us. We SHOULD be working on defenses against such an event but most of society has this predisposition to the idea that "If it hasn't happened to me, it won't!" and will only take measures to prevent something from happening again.
Unfortunately at that point it'll be abit too late.

Jupiter is ALOT bigger a target.

We do have defense plans for this. If one that size were coming at earth we would see it months before it hit and could take action. The smaller ones are what should be worried about because they are hard to spot and we'd only see them a few days ahead of time.
Silly you not 2012 yetHow come nothing that devastating has hit another planet yet? Not doubting it's possibility, just wondering.

Can you please tell me what defense plans we have that are feasible? "SHOOT A NUKE AT IT!" doesn't work. Neither does theoretical plans for some laser that shoots it off orbit that we currently have one scientist working on. I sure as heck haven't heard of any plans. So....link?
And if we do, who gets to decide who gets to save the planet? Unfortunately we have many nations on the planet and they're all going to bicker about who gets to fix the situation. By the time we finished arguing, it'd be too late.
