Somatic senses are easily the most important. Try walking around completely numb and see how long you stay alive. This does happen in a very rare birth defect. People born with it aren't completely numb but they're unable to feel pain. The result is that they usually die shortly after learning how to walk.

After that I'd say sight followed by hearing then smell with taste being dead last since humans are barely able to taste anything anyway (the vast majority of your sense of taste comes from your olfactory sense. Your tongue is almost completely useless as a sensory organ).

"Common sense" is the same thing as "popular opinion". Which really doesn't mean much, considering that most people are ****ing morons.

Wrong. Popular opinion is "American Idol rocks" "Global Warming is caused by man"

Common sense is "Sticking your hand in fire is not a good idea" or "Dont stick a gun in your mouth".

Sight because you wouldn't be able to see this thread and all the cool sigs (trust me on the sight thing: 20/50 with corrective lenses, can't even get a drivers license).

No, "common sense" is "common". That's it. Depending on who you talk to, it's "common sense" that the blacks are stupid or that god hates gays.

You are wrong.

Of course it is common, otherwise it wouldn't be common sense.

The REAL problem with common sense is that it is often stupid and illogical.

See, it is common sense that having common sense is a good thing. However, the people who think that having common sense is good are also the people who never even bothered to think about what "common sense" actually means.

And that's the thing about common sense. Common sense has nothing to do with logic or reason. Common sense is the stuff that everybody "knows" but never thinks about. The problem is that since they never think about it, they're frequently wrong.

Yeah, but either they don't realize what's wrong with the kid until its too late or the kid gets hurt and no one finds out. Even assuming the kid does make it out of childhood they're still very likely to die early. For example, they could step on a rusty nail and never notice. Or they could have appendicitis and never know. Just think about all the times you've been going about your business only to suddenly feel pain because you stepped on something/pulled something/cut something/smashed something/broke something/etc. Now imagine if you had never felt that pain.

I remember reading about a girl in my high school psych class who had this problem. When the article was written she was six years old and her family had to basically be OCD about everything she did. When she had recess at school she had to wear a helmet and then get checked by the school nurse before going back to class. Even then she still managed to get into trouble. For example, she let a boy poke her in the eye with a stick multiple times without ever telling anyone until long after it had happened.
