According to Variety, Steven Speilberg has just aquired the rights to a live-action adaption of Ghost In The Shellfor Dreamworks. It initially started as a bidding war between Sony And Universal Pictures, but Speilberg took a personal intrest in the project and snatched the rights up. I guess being one of the most powerful figures in Hollywood has its privileges. Here's a quote from the article:

" 'Ghost in the Shell' is one of my favorite stories," Spielberg said. "It's a genre that has arrived, and we enthusiastically welcome it to DreamWorks."

No word yet on weither he will direct, but I imagine at the very least he'll be producing. I look at it this way...no matter how it turns out, it HAS to be better than Fox's live-action version of Dragonball.

Here's the proof.

Though that is amazing that Spielberg is making it, I can't help but think this will be another Matrix.. Afterall Matrix got the majority of its ideas and inspiration from Ghost in the Shell.

I'm going to sound like an idiot for saying this, but:

What's Ghost in the Shell? A comic book? A book?

Hmmm, it is one of two Animes I like... so long as he doesn't make it into a film suitable for kids I'm okay with it.

I agree. However, most films based on existing properties do have a tendency to make money, which is probably why Hollywood greenlights so many. It seems that either most studios are afraid to take a chance on an original idea, or if they do, they can't market them properly, resulting in having the film being released to little-to-no publicity.

Ironically enough James Cameron is making a anime remake called Avatar.. And Wachowski brothers are making another anime remake, speed racer (though it looks awful from trailers), ironic no?

It initially started out as a manga, but since has evolved into a couple of anime films as well as an animated series.

SAdly this is true. Stick with the formula that brings in money.

But in Speed Racer's case, the original source material wasn't the best looking series around, anyway. It's marketed torward the yournger crowd anyway, so to me it's no big deal.

I can see this being a fine transition to live action. However, I'm sick of all these remakes and sequels. Think of something new god damn it! I'm just waiting for the few good movies that have been released recently to get sequels.

You have already seen it in the form of the Matrix.. Inspiration, style and ideas were taken from Ghost of the Shell to make the Matrix.

and they're turning it into, what looks to be, a bad ass movie. they took the source material, and improved on it exponentially.

Freaky concept if that were to happen. Besides, I can't get upset by remakes or live action adaptions of properties that has been around for awhile. For example,I know there were people who were fuming over the live-action version of Transformers, but what some people don't realize is that the things that they grew up with weren't made exclusively for them. They were made for EVERYONE to enjoy, and if they change things to get a new generation to be interested in them, then so be it.

What's with all these anime being turned into live action films? NGE, Dragon Ball, and now GitS?

this better not be a family movie, If this is done right and proper homework with GITS creators is done then this movie will have more potential then blade runner, 2001, AI. Not to mention we'll get a good revival for GITS in the gaming industry.

Were really any of Spielbergs movies just little kids movies? Even his ones like Hook and Indiana Jones which got pg ratings for the most part, I still enjoy even as an adult.. I care more for if they are done right, and seeing as Speilberg has made movies like Saving Private Ryan, I doubt he will shy away from making an adult orientated movie.

This has as much potential to be awesome as terrible. If they go ahead and remake the film, it's liable to wind up being like a shot-for-shot comic-book adaptation. Therefore, I hope this film puts a new spin on the plot rather than simply recycling it. They're definitely going to have to put some clothes on the protagonist this time around.

As for the director, I don't believe Spielberg is right for this project. Then again, I don't think there are any directors right for this project in Hollywood.

first off GiTS was a comic long before the anime, and we've already seen how successful the transition from comic to movie can be from movies like sin city and 300. GiTs is definetly one fo the best scifi stories out there would be awesome to se it as a movie.

Avatar isn't a remake of anything. You're confusing it with Battle Angel, which is an adaptation of a manga, not an anime.

I think I would rather see something like Berserk or Vampire Hunter D made into a live action movie.. To me GiTS was already partially made in live action with the spirtual successor called the Matrix.. Its still interesting to say the least.

Hmm, who knows, Ghost in the Shell always seemed like it would be good if wasn't drawn in that horrific scribble called "anime", so a live action version might be good.

maybe Im missing something but I fail to see how matrix is anything like GiTS apart from plugging the internet into people's heads. The Matrix was about robots taking over the world and enslaving and destroying humanity. GiTS is about a elite police force that use robots to help them. There is really nothing similar at all beyond the general scifi aspect.

If Spielberg keeps it close to the source, this could be incredible.

It IS Spielberg after all.

other than the obvious ones; the Wachowski brothers saying that GITS was their main influence for The Maitrix...
