Here it is; Marvel’s biggest risk of a movie is finally here. I was excited for this movie, but I was hoping that the movie would not become a cheese fest. So, on Thursday, I went out and saw it. Here’s what I thought of it.
Peter Quill is your average, run of the mill Han Solo type character, whose job is to steal things for people to get paid. His most recent smuggle is something of true value and power, which gets his face on a warrant. And through a circle of events, he gets arrested, along with Gamora (a green alien chick), Rocket (a talking raccoon), and Groot (a tree man). In prison, they meet Draxx (a blue dude) and together, they become the Guardians of the Galaxy no matter how much they don’t want to.
The characters are all really great. Quill (aka Star Lord) is a charming, smart mouth type that has perfect comedic timing. Gamora is the level headed one of the group, who’s pretty cool. Rocket is just downright awesome. He talks crap non stop and it’s so enjoyable to watch. Groot is actually a very sweet, genuine character that is pretty adorable, believe it or not. The character that I was most worried about was Draxx because he looked like he was going to be the generic buzzkill. Thankfully, there’s a good number of comedic timing that comes from him, especially the fact that he comes from a literal galaxy. That made me laugh. All these characters have great personalities and work off each other really well.
The comedy is perfect. All these characters had some great moments that got me laughing out loud. Not only that, but the comedy works really well with the dramatic moments. Believe it or not, there is some good emotional driving moments in this and none of it ever feels force. The comedy and drama are both handled very well.
The action is very exciting. Every hit, shot fired, and explosion has impact and is just enjoying to watch. And to match that with the special effects makes it excellent. The effects are Oscar worthy. Everything just looks beautiful from the space to the technology to the worlds to the space again. It was all just masterful.
I do have one complaint, however. The villain, Ronan, is very forgettable. He doesn’t have much of a motive for being evil other than being Thanos’ puppet. He is like the dark elves from Thor The Dark World. They can’t have Loki, so they might as well throw in the second man. That’s what Ronan is. He isn’t bad, but he isn’t memorable.
Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy is a very fun movie. The story is good, the characters are great, their chemistry is great, the action is exciting, and the special effects are wonderful. You probably have already seen this movie, but see it if you haven’t. And if you have seen it, see it again. It’s probably best to see this again than watch that TMNT crap, amirite?
